I just bought a chrome pickup cover from MF to install on my MIM Jazz Bass, which is maybe 15 years old or thereabouts. I just did a quick test fit and found that the strings buzz against the pickup cover. The shape of the pickup cover looks a little shallower that I would have expected. I am going to return it to MF but was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this. Is there are any significant variation in the shape of these covers that I should worry about? Or does the MIM J-Bass have different dimensions? I assumed I was getting an "official" Fender pickup cover when I ordered it, but now I'm not so sure. The packaging was kind of generic.

Fender never made chrome Jazz Bass pickup covers so right there, you have your answer.

Perhaps you are thinking of the pickup casings. The poster meant the arch over the pickup. They all sure look like chrome to me, including mine.

Is this: http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/ ... sku=301605 the one you bought?

I put this one on my MIM Jazz Bass with no issues. String height (action) does come into the equation here.

Oh, in that case, never mind.

I.E., what are commonly referred to as "ashtrays"

Yes that's the one I got. Did yours come in Fender packaging? I was also a little surprised that no screws came with it. I have bought stuff like this in the past, and I believe it came with both the screws and a template.

While I believe that string height can obviously have an effect, it's hard to believe that the fit would be that close.

No, on the Fender packaging, No, on the screws, and No, on the template.

Fender made chrome pickup adn bridge covers for the jazz bass in 1960,everyone knows that. i own a jazz bass and i use the chrome pieces. if you have trouble with the string buzzing on the pickup cover you should lower you saddles so it doesnt hit the chrome cover. you can also put a washer under the chrome piece to raise it up a little higher so the string doesnt hit it

I ended up just bending the cover just slightly. It seems to be fine now.

Whatever works. I suppose it's possible it got a little flattened in shipping, depending on how it was packaged.

Another point to remember when you install a chrome pickup cover on a Mexi Jazz bass is that the original USA jazz bass has a bass pickup that is shorter in length than the Mexi Fender Jazz bass neck pickup.

This may or may not add to the problem of string clearance.

The main reason that these chrome pickup sheilds don't come with a template is that the basses that they were made for came with the covers mounted, so there should already be holes in the body and pickguard for the respective covers.

I am glad to hear that you worked out a solution.
