Hi everyone,

Anyone use DR Sunbeams? I am thinking of trying them because i'm switching back to roundwound for a while and want to try something i've never used. I understand they last a long time and i'm wondering if they have a vintage sound? And whats the story with the Sunbeam low-riders?

Thanks for the input!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

from what i heard DR Sunbeams are a little middy, which is great for fingerstyle funk, and they have sweet top for thumpin..

for nickel rounds with a vintage vibe I'd go with Fender 7250

If you are looking for a vintage sound you should consider waht was used on most vintage basses...Stainless Steel Flatwound strings.

For local strings, check out the Fender 9050 Stainless Steel Flatwound Long Scale 34" bass strings.

I do flatwounds already, and love them. But on another bass I have, I want to do roundwounds. Is there no such thing as a more vintage sounding roundwound? I guess, I want to stay away from very bright strings. I don't know.

well rounds with a vintage vibe... first thing that pops in my head is Fender 7250
it depends on what you like but EQ'ing helps a little bit..
D'addario XLs are balanced sounding rounds...
DR both have top end and mids...
GHS Bass Boomers have a lot more bottom in them and less top

Try the most famous stainless steel roundwound strings Rotosound Swing Bass (Jaco Pastorius) or the DR Fat Beams (Marcus Miller).
I use the last strings for years and they are great...not only for the Marcus Miller slap sound.

Thanks Jazz,

before I switched to flat wounds I used Rotosound swing bass I think I am leaning toward those.

one good thing about the rotos is the mid presence, unlike slinky stainless and DRs with scooped mids tone..

If you want something different...try the DR fatbeams. What they say on there site is correct. Fatter tone, deeper sound and consistent feel and tone from string to string. I used for 20 years the Rotosound and after experienced with other strings I always go back to the Rotosound...now I use for years on all my basses DR fatbeams.

Good luck with your choice

I play DR high beems and they definitely don't have a mid scooped sound. Not as much mid-mids as the sunbeams, but they accentuate the high mids.

in a way DR Sunbeams are a little bit fatter... DR's doesn't have that much mids but still they do the job.. and i like the way extends both high and low end

A lot of good responses to this question but nobody mentioned the string guage when changing brands. You need to be careful, especially if you play a 5-string, as not all string sets come in the same guage. If you switch to a set that's even a little lighter than what's currently on your bass, you could wind up with a lot of string buzz, which is caused by the string not being tight in the nut.
