Hey guys, if you were to replace the pickups in your jazz bass, what would you replace them with and why?

I've heard mixed reviews of the usual suspects and I wouldn't mind going with pups from a smaller company who maybe takes more care or attention to detail.

I really like the stock pickups on the JB but admittedly don't know much about bass guitar gear!

The above advice should always be considered; but if you are really looking for a switch, it depends on whether you want to try something substantially different or more in-line with the existing set.

Personally, when I modded out my '97 FL, I went with the Dimarzio Ultra Jazz DP147/148s. Quieter and ballsier, but true to the original. Of course, I also put in an Audere JZ3 preamp, so it's hard to separate the pickups from the preamp at this point.

Anyway, if you consider PU replacements, make sure you measure your existing PUs, because some Jazz basses have identically-sized PUs, but most have two of slightly different sizes (I forget which is which, but that info is likely on the Fender site or readily available on the web).

I replaced the stock pups with vintage original '62s and I think they are great. Not that the stock pups were bad, I just like the tone I get with the '62s better. Everone likes differnt things, what kind of music do you play? it's ultimatley up to your ears. Good luck

swapping pickups is merely based on what you play and what strings you put them on..

but as for me MIMs stock pickup have that crisp and twangy top not unlike the Custom 60's middy and sweet high end

the stock pickups surprisingly have highs.. they're great but lacking a bit of mids.. thats where Fender Original Vintage shines.. (high mids),
the Custom Shop 60's on the other hand have both high and low mids..

After you experiment more with the stock pickups if you really feel the need to change them I recommend Bill Lawrence www.billlawrence.com Jazz Bass pickups.
