I have a CIJ Jazz from ~'97 that is fantastic. They are very well made and most importantly, they don't have fret lines (ghastly things).

I was lucky to find this for less than $200 about 10 years ago. I've made some mods, obviously, but these are highly recommended (any of the MIJ and/or CIJ FLs).

If you're also open to P basses, I'd recommend the Tony Franklin fretless. I've had mine for about a year and I still really love it. Great tone and built like a tank (hasn't needed adjustment, gone out of tune, etc.) - far more robust than my Rick.

One option to consider is that, if you have the money, you can find a fretted bass you like and have the frets yanked. I have an AmDlx Jazz 5 like that bought off eBay. eBay is a good option as not everybody wants or can play a fretless, so often these basses sell for less than fretted ones. I got mine for (wait for it...) $550 including the deluxe hard shell case.

Just be careful that whoever did the fret yank knew what they were doing. I had pretty good pictures to go by when I bought my bass from eBay, so I felt reasonably confident that I knew what I was getting into. And the Fender plays and sounds great.

It worked for Jaco (vintage model - though was standard at that time).

They only thing, it comes with flat-wound strings. If you decide to use round-wound strings, you will need to coat the fingerboard with some type of protective & tonally changing epoxy. Jaco did, so if the epoxy is done correctly, it can enhance the growl of the fret-less.

Keep in mind, it is a added expense.
