Whats up everybody, I am new to the forum and have decided to create an account after a long history of scrolling thru the forum for advice and tips on how to get optimum use out of my Jazz. Today I am needing advice on pickups. I have a '04 American Jazz w/ s-1 elctronics and have not been happy with my pickup sound. I would like to know what pickups would be best for an aggresive up front attack . I really like a tight bottom with strong mids to get a good cut thru the mix. One thing I dont like is a bass that is just low end that just fills the root notes and is not very noticable. In my band the bass is almost a second guitar being that there is only one guitarist and there is a larger spectrum for me to fill. So.....what pickups should I be looking into ?

Check the Seymour Duncan website, then shop for them on ebay.

if you want to rock it out with tons of bottom i'd suggest DiMarzio Model J,

for midrange rocktone like that of Chris Maresh (Eric Johnson) go for SD SJB-2

for rock scooped mids SJB-3

when you ask about pickups you'll get different answers.. same with choosing strings... the best thing is if you have a friend with the same bass or with the same pickups give it a try.. if you like it.. go get it.. if not look for something else..

Instead of messing with the pickups I wonder if you couldn't accomplish more for less bucks by going with one of the drop-in replacement preamps like the J-retro. I haven't used one of these myself but have been impressed with the video reviews I've seen of them.

With regards to the J-Retro preamp ... will this fit the Fender American Jazz with S-1 Switching? It looks like there isn't room for the battery unless modifications to the body are completed. Can anyone chime in?
