Hey guys,
I'm new to this forum. i recently bought a 70's reissue which I love. Plays awesome, and I love the tone. I am having an issue with a grounding problem I believe. I know that j basses are known for the hum due to the single coils, but when I touch the strings or a metal part, it makes a quiet pop and then stops. I was wondering if I am over worried or would someone believe that there could be a grounding issue with the bridge, or the internal wiring?

if you're unsure try having a local tech examine it...

If the noise stops when you touch the strings, you have a grounding issue.

You first should make sure that the ground wire from the bridge is still soldered to the wiring harness. If it has broken off, then you will experience a large increase in the ground noise of the bass.
To fully check this connection, you may have to remove the bridge to see if the ground wire is making good contact with the bridge.
If not - fix it.

If you search the term " star grounding" you will find a lot of info. on how to properly ground your guitar or bass.

good luck with it.

Certainly there may be a grounding problem in your bass, but don't forget to examine the wiring in your house/apartment.

I had a very anoying ground noise problem that was caused by dimmer switches, not just in my music room, but also in the dining room on a different floor of the house and on a different circuit breaker. Oddly, the bathroom downstairs off of the diningroom also has a dimmer which did not contribute to the problem at all (my wife wired that one!).

To sound like a musician talking about electrical engineering, dimmer switches clip the amplitude of the sine wave of the current and the result is noise. I turn off all lights using dimmer switches when I plug in to play.

YRMV.
