The E string on my '77 jazz bass goes out of tune as it approches the octave mark. The rest of the neck is fine. Any suggestions on how I might fix it? It's a maple neck.
Thanks!

Intonation? Adjusting the length of the string by either pulling it back or pushing it forward at the bridge should fix it. You do this by turning the screw clockwise or anti-clockwise at the back of the bridge under the 'E' string.
This should get you in tune at the 12th fret v the open 'E' - although it's never going to be bang on tune.

A very clear link to the Fender bass set-up guide that will address your intonation problem.

Thanks, guys! It's beautifuly in tune now. Wonder how many idiots like me have never done this? Bought the bass in college to play rock and roll with in the late '70s and had seldom touched it since until recently. It had major neck issues, like many of that vintage apparently did. All finally solved with a couple of dowel rods and some monster scews. It's a lovely instrument now, with a gorgeous tone.
