Hi,

One of the tuning pegs for my American Deluxe Jazz Bass V snapped off. The tuning peg is a "Fender Schaller Lightweight Bass Tuning Key Black/Chrome" type tuner with a two-pin mount. The two-pin mount is the issue.

It isn't a problem to install a new tuner. The problem is that the two tiny plastic pins that anchor the tuner's orientation on the headstock have snapped off and jammed in the pre-drilled holes on the headstock and I have no idea how to get them out.

Check out the photos below.

Does anyone know how to get the plastic pins that are stuck in the headstock out without drilling the plastic bits and potentially damaging the instrument?

Welcome.

Although I've always successfully drilled them out with a steady hand, if I were to try a no-drill method, I might try putting a regular flat headed pin in the hole head first to mate with the broken plastic pin. I'd then heat the flat headed pin with a soldering iron so that it would melt its way down to the bottom of the broken plastic pin. Naturally, I'd insulate my fingers holding the pin in place from the heat in the process. I'd then remove the soldering iron and let everything cool off real well where hopefully the plastic pin will resolidify, essentially sealing itself around the flat pin. Once this is achieved, I could just pull the flat pin out with the plastic pin formed around it all at once.

Ok, so I received a new tuner in the mail, but now the plastic pins that lock into the drilled holes in the headstock seem to be larger than they used to be!

The old tuners had a plastic pin diameter of 3 mm or 2/16 in.

The new tuners have a plastic pin diameter of 3/16 in.

Maybe this was changed in response to this problem? It seems like bigger pins would be a difference in overall sturdiness.

Does anyone know the exact diameter of these parts, or can anyone suggest how to find that out? And if they are measured in millimeters or inches? I want to be precise in repairing the guitar.

Update

I found this from a parts list on a Fender's Danish website:

0056087000
(På bild.)
Fender®/Schaller® American Deluxe Bass Tuning Machine / Chrome (1)

Schaller is no longer producing this tuning machine, and as such, it has also been discontinued by Fender. The closest current match would be the 0063547000.

(Used on 4-String American Deluxe Basses from 1999 to 2004)
(Used on 5-String American Series and American Deluxe Series Basses from 1999 to Present)

I went to a luthier to get the headstock drilled and the new tuner fitted and installed for $5. Unsurprisingly, the new tuner no longer matches the others. The tuning key is larger than the others. I plan to replace all of them with new tuners -- ones that are made out of metal. But since they work fine, I'm leaving them alone as is.
