So this is my fender jazz MIM. It was in our house fire, and everything was destroyed. My room was not touched by the fire but EVERYTHING was destroyed by the smoke. This thing was all black when i got it. They wanted me to throw it away but i refused. Thought maybe i could fix it up or something. Any ideas?

Looks to have a little heat damage too. Check the neck for warping.

With a bit of TLC that should be a nice bass..

The "phoenix" bass. :P

even if you dont get it working, you should still keep it. Im sure you dont want to remember a fire, but it has a unique feel to it ya know?

I am sorry about your losses. :(

If the neck and body are OK, you should be able to reconstruct it even if you need some new electronics. One thing is certain, the wood will be very cured with a truly 'road worn' appearance.

Sorry about the fire. Be glad that you got out OK!

The big question is does the bass still work with its active electronics?
If not, you can go passive but you may have to replace the pickups, pots and everthing electrical to get it reliable.
I have no doubt that the wood body and neck may actually sound better after the fire.
I have seen builders purposely scorch elec. guitars to remove heavy finishes and make the guitars more resonant.

Good luck with it.

Wow, theres no love in this forum as there is in the 6 strings.
Everything was basically black, How much would it cost to have someone to regut it for me? Or is it really hard to rebuild myself? Thats what i really want to do, ive always wanted to rebuild any kind of guitar. It is a deluxe active as well. any thought?

there is no love like the 4 (or 5) string kind. it' may be a little tougher love but it is better love. you got some good practical advice from these gents. our condolences on your bass and count your blessings no people were hurt. the bass can be repaired or replaced.

what were you looking for, a hug? .
