As a frequent contributor to this forum, it seems to me that people aren't using it near as much to tell Fender what we want. So, to get the ball rolling, how about if everyone came up with their top ten (realistic) options they'd like to see. I think to keep this topic relevant to Fender's usual prices that we keep our options framed around a bass that would cost $1500 - $2500. This would put it in the Sadowsky and Lakland neighborhood.

Let's try and keep these suggestions serious and use this forum to put Fender to work for us.

At any rate, here's my top ten for a Jazz:

1) ebony fingerboard with fretless and no dot or block inlay option
2) active/passive switch
3) bridge humbucker and neck jazz pickup option or p/j combo
4) more paint color choices and pickguard options (aka Carvin)
5) more body wood options like bookmatch maple for one or birdseye maple
6) more tone-shaping options ala j-retro or similar
7) matching headstock color or matching wood overlay (see 4 and 5)
8) piezo bridge option
9) at least 22 frets or 24 with fingerboard extension like some warmoth necks (i.e., a 20 fret and a 24 fret neck could share the same body pocket rout
10) all of the above in 4 & 5 string

OK, everybody, it's your turn...

Location: location, location.
The only two additional things i'd really like would be matching headstocks and independent tone nobs for each pup.

Neck binding and block inlays have been much wanted feature on fender basses for a long time. A lot of people bought Geddy basses just for this reason. I think any bass with block inlays or binding would be a popular sell.

Fender really needs to upgrade their active preamps. Most other preamps on the market are superior and if people are spending over a grand on a bass they should get some decent electronics.

I would love to see two features of the American Standard bass on other basses: the high mass vintage bridge and the thin neck and body finish. Both contribute a lot to the instrument and I can't imagine it would be that much more expensive to put these features on other models.

Lastly, fender should stop using ceramic tone capacitors. Sure, replacing a cap is cheap and easy, but the darn thing should come with a decent cap.

After my post about a Fender wish list, I came across videos for NAMM 2010, and it looks like Ernie Ball has beat Fender to the punch on what people are asking for. For those of us who bought MusicMans back when Leo was still around, they've reintroduced a Classic Ray which features the original bridge and some cool 50ish surf colors. But the real news is a new single humbucker 5-string Big Al. You may not like the looks of this bass, but you have to respect what it can do. I'm thinking with the boatload of knobs on this bass you'll be able to dial in just about anything. Ernie Ball has also made some changes to the Sterlings as well. Can't wait for photos and reviews.

BTW: I still love my Jazz more...

I would also go for the block inlays and bound neck, along with a much larger variety of finishes. I would like to be able to get an AmStad bass that looks like the '75 RI with the natural finish and maple neck (like in my avatar) and the modern AmStad refinements. (and no micro-tilt).

An American Deluxe Jazz Bass with an active/passive switch. Key to the perfect bass.

Sadowsky basses are nice, but as much as they look like fenders they sound pretty different.

Jazz bass with Precision body.
Precision bass with narrow nut width (like in 1970).
Headstock painted same color as body option on more models.
Gotoh vintage style reverse tuners with 28:1 ratio on more models.
Precision bass with Jazz bridge pickup, tuned BEAD.

Just offer what Fender Japan currently offers. It's a shame that Fender USA offers only a limited selection of colors. When I see basses on Fender Japan's Web site, I drool.
