Maybe an exception to the rule, but he Highway One Basses aren't 019. Don't think the prefix numbers are that cut and dry. Look also at the back of the neck, down to where the neck attaches to the body. A lot of MIJ have info there.

This link gets as close up as you can, no mention of USA or Japan.

The specs are pretty specific on the graphite reinforced maple neck which is what the American Jazz Bass has, the Jaguar just states "1 piece Maple Neck" also the hardware tuners and bridge are identical to the USA Jazz. Although it's unsettling they aren't calling it USA, I'm starting to think it is.

As said before, it is likely MIA. But just to reiterate, it is definitely NOT a MIJ, because all MIJ basses have "Crafted in japan" at the heal of the neck.

Mr. Gearhead may not include Highway One Basses as MIA then. 011 Prefix is for Highway One Basses. the Steve Harris Bass says MIJ. What's the difference crafted and made in Japan.

Mike Eldred has a forum in the Fender Lounge, he works in the custom shop, this was his response to the question "Made in Japan" versus "Crafted in Japan":

Made is an adjective.
Crafted is an transitive verb.

Other than that, the meaning is the same.

I placed an order from Sam Ash on Friday to get my 1 or 500 :D This is a keeper, a case rider not to be played. Also, FYI all Fender necks MIM/MIA are made @ the Corona Plant in California. Obviously, Japan makes their own. I don't think the 50th Jazz in using spent Jag neck. 8)

Couldn't stand the suspense so I called Fender. It is a USA built bass. I'm trying to figure out a way to break the news to the wife.

Steve, at Fender, said they will be available for shipping in about a month.

I'm jealous but I hope the bass is great. Let us know when you get it. My monthly gear nut is maxed out for at least 10 months. I'm sure they're all gone by now so I'll miss this boat. Beautiful looking bass IMO. Maple fretboard and I would not have been able to resist, maxed out bills or not I would have ordered one. Good luck.

Just met a guy in a bar with a 1960 sunburst Fender jazz. Had to take his word for the year, but it certainly looked like it had the mileage. He bought it new 50 years ago. Was sitting in with some other guys at a blues bar here in Roanoke, Va. We got to talking and he let me hold it and play it (though unamplified). I loved the feel of it. The neck was smaller than my '70s jazz - not narrower, but less round and heavy. Dots on fretboard instead of mother of pearl rectangles. He said it came with some kind of muting apparatus to damp the strings and make it sound more like a standup. He took the stuff off, because he wanted more sustain. Told me someone had offered him $1500 for it. I said, "You laughed at him, right?" In any event, he said it's not for sale.

This from Wikipedia:

"First introduced in 1960 as the "Deluxe Model", it was marketed as a stablemate to the Jazzmaster guitar which was also marketed as a "Deluxe Model" in its own right. It was renamed the Jazz Bass as Fender felt that its redesigned neck - narrower and more rounded than that of the Precision Bass - would appeal more to jazz musicians."

Also says the '60 model had two "stacked" knobs - not sure what that means; maybe tone and volume controls contained in each knob somehow, one for each pickup?? - and only went to three in '61. This guy's bass had two knobs. Also read somewhere that the string muting device he mentioned was only on jazz basses the first two years. . .I'm no expert on pre-CBS jazz basses. Just know what he told me. It had a great feel to it, I know that. Hope he lets me play it again!
One other thing about that bass - it had a waist strap instead of a shoulder strap. The strap fastens to the back of the body of the bass somehow, and fits around you like a belt. Never seen that before.
