OK, I'm gonna open a whole new can of worms: Whatdy'all think of a G-K 550 Fusion(tube/solid hybrid) with a G-K 4-12" NEO cab? I'm thinkin' seriously of getting one. I'll mostly be using my P, but likely will be playing my A. Std. Jazz thru it too on occasion. It's not gonna sound like an SVT, but Can I get a nice warm tone out of it and still have enough "punch"?

I have a GK 700 RB-II and a Neo 2x12 II. It throws more bass than you'll ever need to play a 100-200 room.

A 4x12 Neo should sound killer with the right head. Warm if you need it, hard as dead if you need that too.

But, an FYI: GK service centers are few and far between on the east coast. I'm in Boston, but the closest is a half-hour north of Portland, ME. GK will authorize repair work for a local if they have their 2345 together and they contact GK for a on-time authorization.

You may never need it, but, you know, thought you'd all like to know...

does nailing Flea's tone require a GK amp? or go with his rig like that RB2001?

Not really. I don't think it would be that hard to get his tone through another rig. Then again, his bass tone varies a LOT throughout the years. Are you talking about his Jazz Bass recordings?

Hey guys, can anyone suggest a good amp for a small gig? I have no idea in terms of amps but I have played with Fender Amps, Hartke, Peavey, ...etc but I didn't know what models I've used..

Usually I've been gigging without bringing an amplifier since most of the venues we played have their own, or rents for us but lately I've been thinking of getting my own just in case..

Thanks for the input

I recommend Genz Benz amps for everything. They can do anything, have all sorts of options from combos to larger rigs, the quality is first rate, and I've never experienced customer service like I have with these guys. The owner, Jeff Genzler, is a great guy too.

This is the one you want, the Shuttle 9.0. Weighs just 4 lbs, has a tube preamp, puts out 500 watts into an 8 ohm cab or 900 watts into a 4 ohm. Wonderful tone, enough power for anything shy of a stadium, and it will fit in your cord bag!

Here check this out too, Ed Friedland's youtube review of the Shuttle 9.0 and their Uber Bass 410 cab (which I also have a love):

Hi everyone, I've read most of the posts on the amp. question. On the subject of tubes. Recently I was at a jam and a guy brought in his fender twin from his car in the fall. Well, he plugged it in, connected his strat and began to play at bar levels(sound wise). He didn't let it warm up at all.I was told by bass playing buddy, (40 yrs. ago when tubes was all there was) to ALWAYS warm up the amp. the longer the better. I warm er up for as long as I can. usually1/2 hour minimum. I've used my ashdown, tube pre-amp 12AX7, for 72 gigs,(3yrs). I've never had an issue with the tube.I think that turning the amp off & on alot (heating up & cooling down) is hard on the tube(s). Also I've heard of insulating the head from the vibration of the cabinet with sorbothane (looks kinda like egg carton but with tennis balls). I wonder if this is the reason ashdown hung the evo2 from the roof or top of the combo cabinet. Anyway, I believe that these two things can help get longer life from tubes.

Half an hour for a warmup? That seems excessive. I would think five minutes at the most would be sufficient, if even that.

Hi Bathead, !/2 for sure. Just plugging in my ashdown brings the pre-heater for the tube online. If she's plugged in for 15min.,and I turn it on for 15 min (idling) then I'm happy.I plug in and connect when I first arrive, then while the rest of the band gets setup p.a., drums...ect.When we're done the gig I check the air from the cooling fans and shut her down when the air is roughly room temp.and my stuff is packed ...almost.Ihave done this for years and never had a problem with the lifespan issues, microphonic because of cheap tubes, sure lots of times. Guitar amps(tubes) usually sound better after being warmed up.I've was told that the general rule of thumb is to run tube amps hot...................thanks

Usually it's power tubes that need more time to heat up. Preamp tubes don't need much time.
