nothing gets deeper than my Ampeg SVT 410HLF or my Ampeg PR410HLF. You get the best of all worlds except they're so freakin heavy. I have a Schroder 1212L (two 12 inch neo speakers) it gets really loud and cuts thru the mix like crazy but cannot get anywhere near the bottom end of the Ampegs. They are just remarkable amps. I tend to use the Schroeder more for gigs because at 39 pounds (versus 130 pounds for the PR410) it is just too convenient and it does have a great sound all it's own.

I know it's a bass player cardinal sin to say this, but I've never been a huge ampeg fan. To me the sound is just doesn't have enough clarity. It's too punchy: I like some snappiness in my tone. And when you try to push high end through them it gets glassy. Also, for the ampeg's with tube power amps it compresses the tone way too much for my liking.

I don't know, something about an Ampeg and a Jazz Bass. First time I noticed it was at a rehearsal thru my 1st ampeg cab (an SVT 15e). I hit the low E on the Jazz and the entire room filled up with the clearest, smoothest bottom end you ever heard. It had no attack, it was almost like a hammond b3 keyboard. Like FJ I've been playing almost 40 years (since I was 10) and that to me is the holy grail. Since I've attained the SVT 410HLF and the PR410HLF. These are the last word in low end clarity at any volume. To get just as thrilling a sound and power behind the high end I do use a Tech 21 Sansamp rack mounted pre amp and I set it for SVT and then you really get an amazing tone, clean, clear and low but at the same time, some crunch and dirtiness in the high end that cuts but not shrill. It takes a lifetime sometimes to get the sound you've heard in your head all along. The foundation is IMO is the Jazz with an Ampeg cab.

I can understand why a lot of people love the ampeg tone... but to me a jazz bass through an ampeg doesn't sound like a jazz bass. When I think of the ideal tone, I think of the jazz bass plugged straight into the computer: just the pure output of the instrument. When I run a jazz through the ampeg it sounds like something completely different (yes, I realize no amp sounds exactly like the pure output of the instrument). I can understand why people love it, but it's never been my sound. For the music I do it's not enough to sit under the mix, I have to cut through it. I do far more than holding down the roots, and often play melodies.

I'm not even saying I like a pure hi-fi amp that doesn't alter the signal. I just like the amp to hold true to the source signal.

Sometimes I think bass players get caught up in this is a J Bass and it can only do this. Or, this a P Bass and it can only do this. I don't know how long the masses on here have been doing basses, but the guys that date back to the 60's forward can sure tell what it's like to use an amp that was nowhere near making a bass do what amps can do for the basses today. Try working with only volume, bass, and treble settings on a bass amp. And no little electronic pedals etc. either.

Trust me, I'm not suggesting you can only get one sound from a P bass or J bass. However some amps do bring out the differences between the two, and some blend them. I have said for a long time that a J bass can do P sounds and vice versa. Personally, when I like playing through an amp that brings out the subtle differences in basses. Ampeg has a tone that a lot of people love, and a P bass does sound different than a J bass through them, but it does blur the line between them a little.

i liked the ampeg after hearing most of Zender's tracks and live with Mark Ronson... using a 64 p and an ampeg rig...

also i noticed that ampegs bring out the most of the bottom...

also one thing that i liked is flea's jazz bass tone on a GK which i'd want to sound a bit close...

and Paul Turners tone on an Aguilar DB750.. but hell, i couldn't afford those sets

I really was going on about Ampeg Cabinets. I ended up getting away from Ampeg heads and/or Combos. IMO, an ampeg head can keep you under the mix a little. I use MarkBass or Genz Benz heads and I also use pre amps (Alembic, Tech 21, BBE MAX) depending on the sound I need. I think the Ampeg cabs handle it amazingly well. I like that Flea tone, lots of Crunch, I also like the old Chris Squire tone where you get that overdriven treble crunch but clear bass on the bottom simultaneously. Those are the sounds I go for and the Jazz with those heads, those pre amps and Ampeg cabs get me that sound. This like everyting else is personal preference. One man's garbage is another mans treasure. I get inspired by what I feel is a great bass tone. That tone may be the opposite of what another bass player is looking for, although I do have to say, at reahearsal and at gigs I get a lot of bass players complimenting my tone.

Agreed. I was talking about the heads. I have nothing against their cabs. I also love Genz Benz and Markbass, and/or other preamps in the mix.
