Hi all,

This is my first post, so be gentle!

I am interested in buying an American Standard Jazz Fretless, but beyond black and sunburst, I have yet to see much colour choice at retail or on the web.

Is it possible to place an order with a Fender retailer for something like a seafoam green or fiesta red Jazz with a matching headstock? A $1299 American Standard is IMO a perfect bass and I would not want to go the Custom Shop route for $$$ reasons.

I have seen a few American Standard Strats and Teles in this colour combo, but I haven't seen a fretless Jazz like this.

Thanks!

I believe you'll find that you have to go the Custom Shop approach. I asked this same question to a local Fender dealer and they gave me a worksheet of options which started with a Jazz bass that you then added options to.

Here's a thought: for what you'll pay for a Custom Shop bass, you could probably get a Lakland for less, and for even less money you could get the new Squier James Johnston Jazz Bass®, which has a matching headstock although it only comes in blue I think. This bass has a basswood body which is some circles translates to kindling, but Ernie Ball uses it on their Bongo basses, and those are some sophisticated basses. Lakland offers matching headstocks on their U.S. basses for about $400, so based on their website, you could get a 5-string "Jazz" for roughly $4200.00. Not cheap but at least it's in color.

If you must have a Fender and it must be a custom color, maybe the cheapest route is to buy a Highway 1, or any Fender that doesn't have the polyester finish, and just pay someone to refinish it for you. You could probably get this done for a few hundred at any number of shops.
