Would there be any problem installing the old pickup covers on my Jazz bass that doesn't have the holes for them already? I know most users didn't want them on, but I like the look and I've played on one with them on and it didn't get in my way at all, so I kind of want them.

Sorry if this has been asked already.

Shouldn't be a problem, I would pre-drill the holes. Good luck, It is a great look with the covers isn't it.

Alright, thanks for the info.

Yea, I really like the look of the covers. I'm too poor to buy a re-issue, and I need a lefty model, I'll just make mine look like one. haha.

In my experience the poly doesn't like to be drilled and will come off in a big chips. I've finally figured out that If you want a nice clean hole, cover the approximate spots where you will be drilling with masking tape first. I use the blue kind but any type will do so long as you don't leave it on for long. In addition to keeping the paint from flying off in big chips the tape also takes pencil marks well. You'll get a much cleaner looking hole if you drill through the tape.

I use a very small bit. Before drilling on the bass I drill through a soda or water bottle screw on top and use that bottle cap for a spacer to make sure I don't drill all the way through the body which would really be a bummer.

What I do is measure the length of the screw (with maybe a 1/16 th of an inch extra) and then place a bit of masking tape on the drill bit corresonding to that measurement, and when drilling, stop when the piece of tape touches the body.

Spinning tape won't stop the poly finish from chipping off since there is nothing to hold it down. But your tape will look very pretty spinning above the surface where it does no good whatsover, other than as a depth marker. That way you can drill down to where the finish USED to be.

Ohhhh look at the masking tape spin! It is so festive!

I think he meant that he does that instead of using a bottle top for a spacer and in addition to putting tape down to protect the finish.

Sorry, but I just pictured the tape spinning and fluttering about is all. Did not mean to be snotty. My bad sense of humor again.

Yes tape will work as a depth marker, but is not as sure a thing as a good solid stopping point. Just like to know that I can not possibly drill through the body if I should slip or something. I learned from experience that putting masking tape directly on the finish where you are going to drill is a good thing to do. It gives you a good surface to mark on and it protects from paint chipping. I have put on many sets of covers and got chipping around the holes on the first two that I didn't use tape on. One of the chips was pretty bad. It isn't a problem until you take the cover off though because it doesn't show with the cover on. Since I started using the masking tape where I'm drilling, I get much smoother looking edges around the holes. Just be sure to take the tape off immediately.

Agreed, but I find that if I go slowly and carefully, the masking tape is a simpler yet effective method for me. I guess it's a matter of how confident you are in your drilling technique.
