i play a MIM jazz bass and was thinking of replacing the neck pickup with precision pickups. i know they have the precision basses with the p and j pickups, but i like the jazz body and neck.

i play in an alternative/punk band similar to +44. i know mark hoppus uses precision pickups in a jazz body and i like his tone, but i also like the tone of the bridge pickup in my jazz.

anyone know how expensive this would be?

You have to rout the body. You also have to chose the exact location: in the regular P pickup location, it doesn't fit on the pickguard. Most P/J basses on a Jazz body put the P pickup 1/2" closer to the neck. You can get P/J pickguards at Warmoth.

Not sure on the cost: I've never done body routing at a shop. If you go to the nearest place you can always ask for the price. I mean, if you are experienced in wood working and have your hands on a P-bass pickup rout, go for it. Otherwhise I'd have a pro do it.

This is going to be a fairly costly little project. I know of some alternative suggestions with the setup you seek.

Aerodyne Jazz
Jazz Bass Special (discontinued, so buy used.)

Out of curiosity, how much do body routs usually cost? I've never done one or asked for a price quote before.

I am a part time luthier. On something like a body rout, you would pay by the hour. Probably about 40 - 60 per hour depending on where you are, and the local rates. A body rout doesn't take too long; about 2-3 hours if the shop has the proper template. All the hardware has to come off, and the neck off the body also. The body also has to be protected with paper and tape.
Reworking the pickguard is approximately the same amount of time. There are P/J pickguards available on a few different sites, and that would be cheaper than reworking yours. Then the guitar is re-assembled; 1 hr, a setup would also be done; another hour.
Like brotherdave said, this would only be a good idea financially if you really can't part with the guitar you have.

Just a thought. You might consider some other type of humbucking pickup for the front that would be easier to rout (like a BassLines for instance). It may not be the "look" you want, but sound should come first. Delano makes a pickup that combines one role of poles like a MM and the other row like a Jazz. Have no idea what they cost, but it seems like a great idea.

Hey, if you're gonna cut a hole in your bass, go different!

There are too many P -J basses on the market and I don't think you get that much out of this modification compared to what if does to the value of your bass.

I would rec. looking at alternative pickups that fit the existing holes on your Jazz bass as opposed to routing for a P-bass PU.

I just bought a P-J Precision Special for less than $300.

It gets that P-J sound and its different than a Jazz bass tone.

I like my Jazz basses as is. I think the pickups on a Jazz work together better than a P-J arrangement.
