Hi guys.. can anyone share some opinions and for those who owns or played with a Geddy Bass...
I just wanna ask the pros and cons of the bass and why should I get one? or should I look for something else?

I owned a GL for about five weeks and I liked it, but it was lacking in low end funk - if you know what I mean. I read an interview with GL where he said that he couldn't explain why it sounds so much different than other Jazz basses. Well, when I got it I found out why it sounds different; A large portion of the Jazz's sound actually comes from the neck, the thinner it is, the less beef the bass will have. My AS has a much chunkier neck and, therefore, the sound is more powerfull on the low end. It's just a question of how much wood is actually there and the GL has less wood. Live though, that wouldn't make much difference as you can always crank up the lows on it, but I had a tough time getting it to dig in while recording it, so, I ended up trading the GL in for my AS, which sounds much better to me.

You need to make sure that if you are playing with a band, that the sound actually fits to your band's sound - it may be right, but it may not be.

At any rate, the instrument was very well made, it looks really cool and plays very well - the neck is fantastic. The made in Japan thing did bother me a bit I have to say. I just like to see "Made in America" ,it makes me feel that I have an authentic Fender instrument

neck does affect the tone? from what i hear.. if you put it an original 62 Fender pickups set.. they sound well on the high mids, and the top, smoother yet lacking on the low mids, and the stock American pickups give you that low mid grind but lacks high mid growl.. same with the mexican standards...

Well, you asked my opinion and I gave you my opinion - it's your money, do whatever you want to do. I personally would never ask anybody's opinion as to what I should buy because I know what I like and can decide that for myself. I believe though that GL has enough people around him who could have simply told him it was down to the pickups, if, indeed, it was down to the pickups, but it's not down to the pickups. You can put any PU you want in a standard Fender bass and it will still never sound like a GL.

I'd agree with what you said, a mexican or any bass copy would never sound like geddy.. even if it's has the 62 pickups... plus the GL bass has a little more punch in the highs..

the reason i'd ask others is that in our place we don't keep basses in stock, so I'd have to pay the bass shipping fees before i could get to try them..

Gotcha. I am in the siuation myself of not being able to get to a store when I was in the market for a new bass, I had no other option but to buy online. So, pretty much, even though I was in the market for a P-bass to replace the one I had to sell a couple of years ago, (I wanted to get a Tony Franklin fretted model), I couldn't find exactly what I wanted for sale online, and as it was the very first bass I saw in a Fender catalog in '74 that inspired me to want a Fender bass, I took the plunge and got myself a Jazz instead from Musician's Friend. It was a bit of a gamble, but I got lucky and I'm quite happy with what I got. Soemtimes you just gotta take a risk.

risks are part of it... i had one experience where i received a damaged jazz, i guess i couldn't get the strings below 1/8" on the bass side and 1/16" on the treble side, i couldn't ask for a replacement since its the last one.. and the guitar shop charged me for the shipment fees..

Hey guys,

all this chat about the Geddy Lee, I'd like to ping you for your opinion. I picked one up so the wife can learn to play. Should I have it set up for her? String height, etc..... She has never played any type of guitar.

Thanks

yes i believe you need to set up the guitar well and what suits her... i think its up to her on what she wants.. like too high action could make you feel tired easily, tight tension but no buzzes especially if you like to dig in, but if you have a light touch and like a softer feel, go for a smoother low action..

I would get it set up.
That was one of the reasons I quit guitar for bass so many years ago, that first guitar I had was a piece of crap with heavy strings and lousy action
(didn't know about setting up string action or lighter guage strings). Bass was way easier to play than this hunk of wood. It can be frustrating to a beginner if the guitar is difficult to play. I believe a decent instrument, proprerly set up, is essential for a beginner.

I'd agree with bathead on this one.. nothing beats a good set up... and its best done with an experienced or knowledgeable tech..
