I just bought a 1996 MIM Fender fretless Jazz Bass a couple of weeks ago and the stock pups just aren't cutting it. I'm looking at buys a set of the Custom Shop '60s J-Bass pups, but I would like to hear some reviews of this pup before I spend the $140 on them.

Tell me what you like about them, what you don't like about them, are they worth the money, what kind of tone do they give you. Just so you know I play folk, classic rock, country-rock, blues, and blues-rock.

Thanks!

These are the pickups I use in my '08 MIA jazz bass. I remember when I was researching them I got a huge range of contradictory reviews, so I'll try to compare them to other pickups.

I like to think of them as middle ground between vintage and modern style pickups. Modern jazz pickups are characterized by a lot of low mid presence with less high mids and a really wide range of treble frequencies. This is similar to what you're stock pickups have, though the stock have less overall midragne. Vintage jazz pickups have less low mids but very strong high mids, which gives you the classic "growl."

The custom 60's are overwound vintage style pickups. What this does is add more low mids and make the treble less sharp. Overall there is a TOn of midrange, and I find it a really good balance between the low and high mids. You can easily get a modern or vintage sound by cutting one of the mid range frequencies slightly and boosting the overall volume.

Just keep in mind it will have less treble than your current pickups. I personally like this: it has enough treble presence but cuts down on finger noise. Some people like a lot of treble though. Also, a lot of people try to fit pickups into "bright" or "dark." These are neither. They're midrangy. You can easily brighten them up or darken them up. The nice thing about having such a strong midrange presence is that it makes it very easy to shape the sound to get other tones. I often find it sounds better to subtract midrange than to add midrange.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask. Also I bought mine on Amazon for $130, so you might want to look into that if you want to save 10 bucks.

It dares to hear it though of course, there is ..each person.. wisdom.

Please let me know what bufferamp(not DI) is best for 1960 customshop JB on stage.
Because I use activebass like 1986specteor and pedura frettless at the same time.

Thanks
