I am looking at a Fender Jazz Bass online that is simply listed as
"Fender Jazz Bass Special Edition" It is a natural wood finish and has both pick ups in a direct line as apposed to the pick ups being set slightly askew of each other. Does this bass ring a bell to anyone?
Thanks for any help,
Liuckydog38

I'm not an expert but this sounds like one of several versions Fender put out in the 90s. I saw something similar to what you're describing on two separate occasions. Both basses had a Precision-style body with one J pickup and one P pickup. One of the basses had what appeared to be a bookmatch top but the shop owner said it was actually a "photo" finish which is a technique sometimes used on inexpensive furniture to emulate more expensive woods. I think these basses came out around the same time as the Jazz Plus, which is similar in having the P-body but has Kubicki electronics and a very slim neck. This bass was made in a 4 and 5 string version. These basses are on Ebay all the time usually for a decent price. The sound of them is supposed to be excellent but the neck is too thin at the nut for my taste.

Hope this helps.

I believe what you are talking about is now called a FSR (Fender Special Run) but these had an oval stamp on the back of the headstock that stated FENDER SPECIAL EDITION. These were made in the early 90's in freakish colors otherwise not available. So far as I could EVER tell there is no difference other than these were made in very limited numbers in colors not otherwise available in a Jazz. The two colors I recall evaluating are Sapphire Blue and Shoreline Gold. Great unique colors too. Runs were LIMITED, I've heard several figures but 150 keeps coming up more often.

Everything else about them other than the color is pretty much stock issue for the MIM STANDARD of the day.

As a collectible they might be worth 50 to 100 US Dollars more each than a stock color bass and the $100 figure is pushing it to the max. The color and the oval stamp on the back of the headstock was all that really unique about them. There was nothing else special about them otherwise. I would not pay over $550 for one in mint condition. The Shoreline Gold ones seem to pop up less often for some reason. I tend to think the Shoreline Gold were the run of 150 and the Sapphire Blue ones were possibly a bigger run, maybe 500. I've heard of them in other colors but never actually personally evaluated one in another color, and unless I've seen one in person I consider it a legend like a unicorn.

I have a MIM Special Addition Jazz I bought in April '08 at Guitar Center, but they were available online through Musicians Friend as well. Mine is natural finish ash with a rosewood fretboard. I'll try to post a picture to see if this helps you ID yours.
