I am going to be buying a new bass soon but I can't decide between an American Deluxe Jazz bass or a Spector Euro 5LX bass. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions. I play everything from classic country to Classic Rock.

Thanks
Steve

Have you tried playing both basses within the same timeframe?

I recently purchased an American Fender Jazz Bass but made the decision only after I played it and a Music Man Stingray at Guitar Center for several hours. I plugged each one into a GK 700W 1001 head with a 4X10 cab (since that is the rig I have at home). Switching between basses, I could really feel and hear the differences between the two. I'm glad I did it because now I really know that I made the right choice. The American Fender beat it in playability, tone, and versatility. It's a great bass guitar!!

OK thanks. No one carries Spector bases where I live. They used to but one of the stores got rid of the line and no one here has an American Deluxe Jazz in the store. My music stores here suck.

Since posting this, I ran into Dingwall basses. I am doing research on these basses and apparently, these basses are supposed to be top notch. The afterburner one is around the same price as an America Deluxe Jazz. When you order it, they make it for you custom. Check them out.

You are looking at all VERY different instruments here. I caution paying that much money for an instrument you have not tried before.

I agree with Anubis16. Do yourself a favor and sit down with the instrument for a long time before you make the purchase. I thought I would like the feel and sound of the Music Man Stingray until I compared it directly to the Fender Jazz Bass. They were much different and the Jazz Bass was much better (for me!).

Ya, I guess your right. I have tried an American deluxe before I like that, its just trying to get hold of basses that no one has here. I may have to take a trip to a big city around me.

Thanks for all the input guys, I appreciate it!!

Cheers

I own a Spector Euro 4 and the craftsmanship is off the charts. An incredibly made work of art. Having said that, those EMG pickups just don't do it for me. 100% lacking in character. Go with the Fender.

I've owned both - the Spectors are well made but for me are a little unbalanced (neck heavy), I dont like the 17mm spacing and dont like the round body shape. For that matter Ive owned many top end Warwicks, Spector, Zon and Ibanez just to name a few but have always just loved my Fenders. You wont regret the money spent on a Fender, and as a previous post stated tons of character in those J pickups.
Go Fender.

Right off I admit to being prejudiced about the Am Dlx as I own one and it is truly superb. Having said that, if price is a consideration, you might think about getting an American Standard. This is still an awesome bass, and down the road if you have to have that "deluxe" sound you could add in a third-party tone circuit, or just model your sound some other way.

Obviously the Am Dlx is the gold standard unless you go for a custom shop one, but I haven't seen anything about the custom shop models that justifies the extra 50% in price. Also, don't forget Ebay. I got mine off there for a song. If you're willing to take a chance with the online thing you could come out way ahead. I did and paid less for my bass than a Squier. You just have to be sure what you're shopping for. A lot of sellers on Ebay list basses as Am Dlx when they are really just standards or MIMs so know what the bass looks like in real life before you bid, and be sure to count the knobs!
