Hello everyone,

I know it is said that instead of re-fretting a standard jazz bass just buy a new one BUT I have made several upgrades to this bass within the twelve years i've owned it and I love the bass and tone. I also have a sentimental attachment to it. $ is tight and with all my domestic bills, mortgage, two children, and lets not forget Christmas is upon us, I can't just simply replace it. The lower 5 frets need to be placed. It's starting to show grooves and I can hear the buzz. The Question is can I, FOR NOW, just replace the 5 frets in question or does this create other problems some how? And how much would this cost? I need some direction and input from experience as to my plan for the fret problem i'm facing. I no longer use my bass as a means to make some additional income but i'm lucky enough to have a band that plays every week, for the past thirteen years. So it's hard or me to justify to my wife at least the cost of a new one. Of course I would go with a new American since the upgades I have done are geared in that direction. Any input is appreciated. Happy Holidays to all!!

Happy Holidays to you too!

Just because the frets are pitted, it doesn't necessarily mean that they need to be replaced. Sometimes, if there's still enough meat left on them, a grind and polish (G&P) of all the frets will suffice. This is where they file all the pitting, dips and grooves out of the frets, recrown them and polish them out so they all look new again (minus a bit of height, of course). The average price is around $90.

A partial refret costs approximately $10 per fret and winds up where a grind and polish is still required to 'blend them in' with the rest. Some shops will do partial G&Ps, some won't. The same goes for the charge where even if they will do a partial, they still may bang you for the whole thing.

A total refret (not counting a new nut if necessary) is about $190. Whatever G&P MAY be required is part of the price.

It's a christmas MIRACLE! Thanks for the info Martian thats sounds resonable, hopefully my bass is a candidate for a g&p. Now I have a better understanding of my options. Probobly needs to have a check up anyway as far as the neck and all that jazz. Thanks again
