I have a 2009 Standard Jazz, maple fretboard(MIM). I'm not sure what pickups come with the bass but I'm thinking of changing them out. I have 2 listed below. Is anyone familiar with these and which would you suggest as an "upgrade" to the stock MIM?

Btw, I have a 2006 Geddy Jazz. Do you know what pickups are standard for it? Thanks.

The MIM jazz bass comes with just regular stock pickups, i.e. heavy low mid, weak upper mid, glassy high end. The geddy lee model uses original fender pickups (62 reissues), which are also available aftermarket.

I have the Custom overwound 60's in my 2008 MIA jazz bass, and I think they are fantastic pickups.

To break it down, vintage jazz pickups (like what's in the geddy lee) have very strong upper mids (growl) but less low mids (grind, meatyness of the tone). Modern pickups, like what you have in your MIM, are the opposite: more low mids, less high mids. In general, the modern pickups have less overall mids, with a more extended treble.

The overwound 60's take the vintage type pickups and overwind them. This essentially adds more low mids while preserving most of the high mids. It also reduces some of the trebble, but there is certainly still a treble presence. I find they are a very nice medium between the modern and vintage type tones. Use both instruments you own as a reference point. If you love the low mids of the MIM and the high mids of the Geddy Lee, the overwound 60's could be a good choice for you.

Thanks for the help, appreciate it. I'll go with the 60's overwound.

Where do you get these overwound pups at? Do these sound more like the VM pups, cuz I was going to replace them, but it sounds so nice. I'm thinking of replacing the '99's pups to something that sounds like the VM.

It will be a while now. I just found out today I have to get a "total shoulder replacement". Oh the joy of it all.

Jeeze, I hope that goes well for you. Hopefully it's not your bass playing shoulder~

It's my left shoulder, my fingering hand.

well Model J's are more humbucker like, they're deep, dirty, and punchy with a shy high end... but they don't really sound "vintage"...

Fender Custom Shop 60's, I'm beginning to like these pickups more and more... they're not that hot, so there's more wood in the tone, and tamed high ends combined with midrange goodness..

i don't think you can go wrong with any of the two pickups..

Couldn't say it better myself. Definitely a "woody" tone, that's from the strong and focused low mids. Out of curiosity, do you like the amount of high mids?

I personally think it has more high mids than the MIM and MIA standards, but still slightly less than the 62 reissues.
