I *believe* the Time Machine series is the basic custom shop models, i.e. team built, whereas the limited editions are generally master built. There may be some minor differences between the models, but I believe that's the biggest difference.

A few custom shop basses have had the custom 60's pickups, like the time machine closed closet series, but that was discontinued, and Im pretty sure none in the current product line use those pickups.

which do think is better in terms of sound? the American Vintage Series 62 or the CS 64? I have heard a lot of tracks with the 62 RI but never from the 64 yet.. and i think they both were made to the same spec as they were way back?

I have owned both of these instruments now, and IMHO I much prefer the 64 limited J-bass over the 62 AV. I like the feel of the neck more, and the sound is also better to my ears. Having said that I like the 62 very much, and would recommend this bass in a heart beat to anyone looking for a J-bass if cash is an issue. I got very lucky and got my 64 for a great price, but if I had to pay what I see it advertised for online I'm not sure if I could justify the purchase with this economy. However, if you have the money the custom shop instruments have the mojo.

I was planning to save up for a 64 but err.. do they offer any other color besides the 3 tone sunburst? well I'm not really a fan of sunburst... i read back in 2005 they do have the olympic white, but now there's only 1 and the limited edition has an option for black...

The only option I know of for the 64 is if you get the limited in black, What state are you in? I know a dealer that has a black one, does lay away, and is selling it for a very good price. PM me for more details.

I understand. I got a limited in black, but I like olympic white too. I have seen them on guitar centers website, along with a few others offering it in olympic white, but the price is up there. Still if you have the cash its worth it. Good luck

I went through this same decision making process last year and opted for the AV 62. I got a really nice one from theperfectbass.com in Olympic White. Everything about it rocks, best Jazz I've played.

At talkbass.com I seem to recall most folks who had both said they sounded the same, just minor cosmetic differences, which was my experience between the CS and AV P-basses I own so I expected that.

If money's no object, get a CS but if you blink at the price get the AV, it's just about as good but at half the price.

In 1988 I bought a '62 Mary Kaye Jazz from Guitar Center in San Diego, Ca. for around $1200.00. I had a real good relationship with said Jazz for 10 years. I was looking for something to replace it but it had to be as sweet playing as that '62. I tried everything out there. I have been playing Fender basses since 1974. I gave up for a while thinking nothing would ever come close. I finally ordered a '64 Sunburst from the custom shop and guess what. It plays and sounds just as good if not a bit better then the '62. To be honest they both are the same, I just prefer the neck on the '64.

Understand that feel is subjective. The neck on the '64 feels thinner to me and is a little more comfortable in my hand where a '62 feels thicker. Please understand that this is subjective.

i see... 64's are slightly thinner even though they have the same radius?
i understand that "neck feel" is important and well by thinner you mean a lot comfortable especially like i do have smaller hands..
