I haven't picked up a guitar for 50 years! Looking to buy a Jazz bass which a chap has advertised locally.
He says it is made in Mexico and the only thing he has changed is the pick guard to make it look more like the American version.
Please believe me when I say I am the most amateur of amateurs here. Is there anything in particular I should be looking for or any questions that I should ask him. We will have to do our asking via email before I make the trip to see the bass.
I live on a small island, and can only get over to the mainland on good weather days. Therefore I would like to find out as much as possible before I visit.
Thanks for any help you can suggest for me.

The only thing he says in his ad is it is a Fender Jazz Bass Mexican made. Sunburst, with a red tortoise pickguard, changed from the original white.
He's asking $500. What does a new one cost roughly?

I bought my new '97 MIM standard jazz bass with 3 color sunburst (usually these are more expensive) in 1998 and I paid roughly $550.00 for it. Is this a relativly new bass?

Thanks for all your comments. Unfortunately the fellow sold the bass yesterday evening! However, I have been looking on ebay and there are a few possibiities on there.
I don't mind paying in the $500 range for a decent one.

An added part to my question here. How would a G & L Tribute 2000 bass compare to the Jazz?
I understand it was Leo Fenders' baby.

I just won a G&L 2000 on ebay. The good thing is that it is in Canada, so no hassles with customs or anything. I might still go after a jazz anyway, just for fun.

Thanks for the information.
As a 50+ year woodworker, I don't think I will have any problems fixing frets and so forth. Electronics might present a different problem however! On another site I did see a comment about what appeared to be unfinished frets, so perhaps that is not so uncommon.
The G&L I have coming is apparently OK in the electronics department. I have specifically asked that of the seller. However, you never know until you get it, do you...time will tell.
I will keep my eye out for a Jazz anyway.
Thanks again.

Well, you've definitely got that right. I mean to say if they are selling a musical instrument, the whole darn thing should function properly.
It won't be long now...

G&L basses are made in USA. G&L TRIBUTE basses are made in Indonesia. Like the OLP copies of the USA MusicMan or the Squier copies of Fender USA basses...They are not quite the same. Fretwork, electronics and tone wood deficiencies will be the norm.
