Hello,Im new to the fender family.I just picked up a fender jazz deluxe mim. I would like to add some mods to it.
A better bridge. (would I notice an inprovement over the stock one?)
New strings.(flatwounds,tapered,roundwounds?)
Bridge cover. Just like the look of it.
perhaps new pickups (emg j's) I have a set of these on my Tobias.
Does anyone have any do's and donts, I dont want to kill the original sound or value but enhance it a bit. I play mostly rock/funk.

If you like the original sound.....why mess with it??

The bridge IMHO is a waste of money unless your current bridge is falling apart. I've changed the bridges on Fenders with Badass bridges...and did not hear a bit of difference. They look better, that is about it. Also, with some of these aftermarket bridges you can't get the action as low as you can with the stock bridge.

Strings is a personal preference. I happen to like rounds. Brighter and more snap when playing slap style.

In regards to the pickups, if the bass sounds good why mess with it. I had that same bass and thought the pickups were great.

Only upgrade the instrument if there are specific aspects of the instrument that you don't like or want to improve on. Upgrades should not be haphazard, they should be very specific.

A new bridge may improve sustain, it will have very little to no change in tone. Unless your bass suffers from sustain, I don't think it's necessary.

In terms of pickups, you want to be VERY certain of how you want the tone to change. You say you want to maintain the instrument's original tone, but changing the pickups will have a big change in the tone. Active EMG's sound nothing like the stock pickups. You also have to double check with Fender's preamp because some active preamps are not compatible with active pickups.

Now,I dont want to change the sound. The pickups are a little tired looking and cleaning them does not help. I think the bridge one is a little dead sounding. Being this is a active bass, could I go with the new vintage noiseless pups that come in the American Deluxe active bass? Would those work and be close to the stock sound? As far as the bridge I think Ill just leave it and add a bridge cover. As far as strings,it seems a lot of players of thees basses use Dr strings or Ken Smith strings. I need it to be smooth sound, but have a little punch when needed. I use Harkte Hydrive 810 can and a LH 1000 head,so I dont want a really brite string ,My highs are fine,Any thoughts anyone?

I would suggest that after you decide what strings you want to use that you have the bass setup by a professional tech. That may be all you need.
