I own a 1966 Fender Jazz Bass. This instrument was bought by my great grandfather. I recently took it to a Guitar Center to get it looked at since i always thought it was a 1976 since that is what the serial plate says. They told me after taking the neck off and looking at the electronics that the actual dating was a 1966. They said that they believe that the back plate got switched in the past during a set-up or something. They gave me a rating also with it being a 7.5-8/10 mint. I didnt like the price they gave me to buy it so i am wondering what it is worth. I have the original Fender Case and it is completly original other than the back plate. What kind of price am i looking at?

Definitely not a 70's bass. They started using block inlays in 66, and that's also when they used the oval paddle tuners instead of the clover tuners.

That's exactly the same as my 66. I have seen them sell anywhere from $2,000 to $10,000.

I have no intent on selling mine, so I never really worried about it.

Play it and enjoy it. After 40 years, the sound of the wood in it will be fantastic.

Not having the actual serial number / back plate may devalue it though.

What is the serial number showing on the neck plate? You can leave out the last digit and I'll wing it.

There is a neck date and you can also date the pots by the numeric pot codes.

Are you thinking it is a 76 because there is a 76 in the serial?
