I had a guy contact me about trading my drums for an old bass he had. He said he thought it was a fender but not for sure. It had been repainted and a fender logo was put on it, but it wasn't the original logo. He said everything on it looked like a Fender 4 string jazz bass. Here's my questions;

Is there anyway when I go look at it I can tell exactly if it is a fender or not?
If it is a Fender jazz bass, will the new paint job kill the value?
How will I know if it is junk or a great find?

I found out that they can't see the serial number because the person hat redid it painted over the serial number

This is NOT Fender. I also don't think it was refinished or ever had a serial number. I refer to this class of basses collectively as "Hooch" basses. It was made in Asia, probably Philippines in a hootch. Hootch is the Vietnamese word for hut. This is a more modern version than many I've seen. It is worth maybe $25 depending on firewood prices in your region. Not a desirable instrument. I would not trade for it.
