hi guys I was just wondering what does flea use in his shell pink jazz bass?

sources say he's using GHS Boomers in his signature bass.. but what about on the jazz? it sure doesn't sound like nickels but they give a dark and clear growl..

i thought i saw one youtube video saying Flea uses D'addario Chromes and the other argued saying they're TI flats... now I'm getting confused.

I don't think flea uses flats at all on his jazz since he still slaps a lot on it. Im pretty sure he still uses his signature GHS roundwounds on his jazz bass, since he has an endorsement.

perhaps some roundwounds.. but i heard he used TI flats during the stadium arcadium recording sessions.. and on the iTunes originals recording i don't think they were rounds either.. they'd sound in between especially the slap tone, its not the usual bright slap..

I thought it had more to do with EQ rather than string selection. However, I checked an old issue Bass Player magazine that had an interview with Tracy Robar, Flea's bass tech. It says that he used GHS roundwounds on the Modulus basses and GHS flats on his '61 Jazz. I guess I skipped over that part before. But the tones on songs like Readymade, Torture Me, and TellMe Baby lead me to believe that he had a seperate jazz strung with roundwounds.

well i was just curious since i saw one video demo of the Chromes.. and there was a reply there saying flea uses them.. unusual.. well I'd believe the bassist of Jane's Addiction as well as Nine Inch Nails uses them.. but flea.. nah.. then there was also a reply saying it was TI, well which i would think it would since its sounds a bit bright, unlike GHS flats which are pretty deep..

Yeah I was really surprised to read that flea used flats, some of the tones are so agressive on SA. I know he has a red '67 Jazz bass with a matching headstock that he may have used for the more agressive/slap tones. If you're wondering about chromes though, I use them on my Pbass and they sound amazing, really deep.
