This one has probably been covered but I'll ask anyway.
I have a heavily modded Mex Jazz 5 Standard with Bart pickups and pre and Badass V bridge. I've notived recently a mob on US Ebay called reliablefender selling parts, and one of those parts is a US Standard J 5 neck - obviously with the posiflex rods and 4+1 headstock - that I would like to grab to further update my bass. The specs seem the same - same amount of frets, same nut width, same radius etc. It should fit right?

Welcome to the forums, I can't give you an answer, but someone that might would be Chet(CA Feathers) or BrotherDave, the former is always on the lounge, the latter peruse all the bass threads here and very helpful. Both are knowledgeable, like a walking encyclopedia :) Anubis16 knows a lot too. Good luck!!

I don't mess with 5 string basses much at all. But on paper it should fit with no problems if the 5-string necks follow the same specs as closely as the MIM/USA 4 string models do. I've seen several USA necks on MIM 4 string bodies, but I've never actually done that mod myself. They apparently just bolt right on. However you would probably be looking at a major setup of course, so unless you are really good at that sort of thing I'd get a tech to do it. That is what I would do myself! Even then, there is always the chance that even though it fits great to the body that it won't play as well as the original neck, so you might wind up putting the original neck back on it. My personal neck philosophy is, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

On a MIM vs USA bass there is no escaping the fact that the better body blanks go to the USA made instruments. No amount of money spent on a MIM bass is going to change that fact.

When you sit down and add up the cost of all your upgrades including the neck you probably could have bought the USA version of your instrument in the first place for about the same amount of money. I realize that there are upgrades that can be done cheaply and easily by a player but new necks, preamps, pickups, bridges, etc all adds up. That being said I'd be very surprised if the neck didn't just bolt right on.

About ReliableFender, I've bought small parts from them (pickups, knobs, bridges, etc) and they are indeed reliable and ship very quickly. They buy whole Fender basses and guitars, sometimes on eBay auctions, which are damaged or non-functional and then they disassemble them and sell the fully functional components. If they say something is like new or excellent condition then in my experience it is. Of course there is something slightly morbid about chopping up instruments, but many of the instruments they buy have problems in the first place which is why they can buy them cheap and then part them out. If you need parts you need parts and some otherwise damaged instruments live on as their parts go to their more fortunate sisters. This is sort of like organ transplants for humans. It is sad that one died, but really great that someone else benefits.

Ha ha - very true - thanks Dave. Thanks for this reply and your personal email.
As you say - if it aint broke dont fix it. Due to cost I may not even do this - I just like the idea of the graphite in the USA necks, on the other hand my fav bass player Mr. Steve Harris of ron Maiden's #1 bass is an early 70's P bass with original neck and it is still going strong with no graphite.
I think the BA V bridge, Bart pickups and J-Retro pre have really made this bass a monster and if I were to buy another similar model bass I would gladly do the same mods, but maybe even after asking this question I should save my $ and buy a backup bass! For the price reliablefender are asking for the neck I could pick up a 2nd hand MIM Deluxe J 5!!!
