Guys recently I had 7250 medium light on my Mexican Jazz..
I think they're kinda heavy for my liking...
is it alright to go mediums rounds or flats on a standard tuning?
my tech suggests I should use 40-95 gauge..
I'm having a phobia that high tension might damage my neck pretty badly..

Yes, it is alright to go mediums rounds or flats on a standard tuning. Remember, the Jazz Bass was designed around heavier gauged strings of the time and so, high tension will not damage your neck. Naturally, you're neck and intonation will surely have to be readjusted though.

A 40 to 95 gauge run is the lightest for a bass. Why does your tech suggest this?

You would have to try pretty hard to damage a Jazz bass. Heavy strings won't hurt it.

He suggested the 40's because he himself uses them and for being safe on the neck, and since I play lightly and mostly into funk..

back then I was using a no name bass, the neck was badly warped before i had it.. since i got no other option, i have been using it for about 6 months, before i got my mim..

I've been trying out basses at the local stores.. since most fender stock strings are 7250.. before on some Squier basses, i liked the feel and everything well "better" than what i borrowed but when I got my fenders, i felt like the tensions too hard for my liking..

but sometimes i want to try out those medium flats or rounds..

Next time I'd be trying out GHS Precision flats mediums or maybe D'Addario Chromes medium lights 45-100.. what do you guys think of the tension compared to stock fender strings?

Honestly, I think you're placing way too much emphasis on the whole pulling tension aspect. Believe me, your bass can positively handle it.

I'd avoid ANY chrome strings though, they tend to be rough on frets.

Thanks much I'll keep that in mind.. I guess that's what I've become since I got that badly damaged acoustic guitar.. and back then I put in 11's on my Squier Strat and forced it to get to standard..

but GHS Precision is my first choice when it comes to flats..

IMO I would get the Chromes before the GHS. And I would get LaBella's before the Chromes.
I had the GHS flats in 55-110 and hated them. I like light tension strings for the simple fact of easier fretting from my point of view, it's my personal preference. LaBella 760FL's are really light, but not as light as TI's. I actually play DR Sunbeams(40-95) on one of my P-Basses and they sound and feel great to me.

how can chromes be bad for the frets? since they're flats?? and how about half rounds or pressurewounds are they bad as well?

I've gone .110 a long time a go, didn't like the buzzing...I've always use .45 - .105 w/o any ill effect on the intonation or the neck itself eyecandy. I wouldn't worry too much about it. My '87 took has gone thru dif't gauges in it's life and the neck is still good. Have fun man!! :)

110? omg i never dared to use those..

back then i was using the Fender stocked strings the 7250ML on the Squier... I loved it before since tension is lighter than my previous bass.. but when i got my fender.. for some reason they felt stiff n i began to hate it...
i shifted to a lighter gauge (Ernie Ball Extra Slinky) a week after i bought an mim.. i never had any strings heavier than medium light before guess I'm gonna look for Hi Beams or maybe boomers or ghs flat mediums next..

Yeah, not a fan of the .110...too much buzz for me, so I stayed with .45 - .105, although I've tried .45 - .100 and .40 - .100 also, .45 - .105 is my fav set up.

i haven't tried standard gauges.. the thickest i used were medium light.. and i didn't like the "tonk" sound of the .100's, the 95 sounds better when slapped and i was thinking of trying for 30-90
