Don't take it the wrong way, cuz I don't hold back on getting new pick ups, but what amp do you have? Is it set up the way you want it? If it is, then pick ups might be the next step...what kind of sound, music, or tone are you looking for? Everyone that has upgraded or gotten aftermarket pickups will tell you theirs is the best - of course :D - but it all depends on the sound that 'you' like. Chet knows what he's talking about, so does BrotherDave, Zod, and few others here. I like EMG actives, it fits the music I play - NYHC/Metal - but it might not be the kind someone else would like. I also have used the same head(and cabs) for a long time tho, which are Hartke Transient Attack 5000 and 210/115 XL cabs. The head I bought new in '94, so I've gotten the sound I wanted from it.

Good luck deciding, hope you get the right one!

i'm got a SWR 2x10c workingmans pro, before that i played a hartke 3500 with 4x10xl and 1x15xl;

i'm not super smart on pickups but i basically have the exact same bass (fender jazz) and its got a lot more punch then this fretless i picked up so i'm thinking maybe the pickups are going bad or subpar?

thanks for the recommendations

You could get dozens of responses of people recommending different pickups that improve the tone in different ways. The question is HOW do you want to improve your tone? A little more information on your end and I'd be glad to help you select a pickup.

Midrange midrange midrange.

vintage pickups tend to have a lot of high mids around 800-1k hrz. Also pump the low mids a tad.

for vintage tones.. pump up the lows and mids.. well mids should be higher to get that growl.. and not too much lows just enough for it to have enough body.. and tone controls down or maybe 30-50%

cool!
I have a standard jazz bass 08 mim chrome red, all stock including strings at this time... so instead of getting a pre-amp, eq pedal, changing pickups, etc... etc... i will play on the eq settings on the amp and get the most out of my bass.
many thanks!
