Hi all, I read somewhere that Berry Oakly had the pups in his Jazz Bass reversed. So that the bridge was up front ect.. Has anyone out there done this? Or what is your opinion of how this would sound. I am thinking of doing this on my secondary bass just to see. I appreciate your comments. Thanks.

Berry Oakley installed a Guild humbucker in the neck position of his Jazz bass and took the Jazz neck pickup and installed it next to the bridge pickup.

The bulk of his tone came from the Guild humbucker and wheather he reversed his stock neck and bridge pickup is not known to me. I doubt that it would make much difference in his bass with the Guild Humbucker dominating his tone.

I would not recommend doing this to your bass. The Jazz pickups on USA and vintage Jazz basses are different lengths so that the pole peices line up with the strings.

On Mexi Jazz basses and J Squires, the pickups are the same length and probably interchangeable.

FYI: Berry Oakley's bass is called the Tractor bass. It is owned and used by his son and I believe Fender made a duplicate of it and sells it through the custom shop.
So If you really want one you can buy one from Fender, if it is still available.

You should be able to get a look at it by just googling "Tractor Bass"

Putting big bass humbuckers on Fender basses was often done in the 60's and 70's although back then it usually meant the owner had a Gibson or Guild bass at home with no pickup because, at that time, aftemarket pickups were rarely seen in the stores.

This practice actually caused Fender to change the Telecaster Bass design to the single humbucker.

I just though you might want to know.

Is that the sound I hear on "Les Brers In A Minor" ?
