Last weekend, my wife and i were driving home from Arlington (TX) Convention Center (having attended the Gutar Show)...She says to me....I think you need a Bass!

Hey...I never argue with a logical thinking woman...well, almost never...

Anyway...we both have Gibson acoustic guitars...I have a Fender Tele and she is looking to get into a Gibson Les Paul...

All that in place....she beleives that I need to also learn Bass....

Well, i am up to the challange (or so I think), but want to inquire to this forum for knowledge and guidance...

My immediate thinking is American Deluxe Jazz Bass® Ash ....

Thoughts....Advice please...

First, I don't know if you should start off with the highest end fender until you really know what you want. P and J basses are different animals, and there are plenty of other non-fender basses out there that you might desirable.

I also don't know if I would recommend buying an active to start. Guitarists don't have to deal with this, but there are active and passive basses out there. Active means there is an on board preamp that gives you active tone controls, like treble, bass, mid. However, active basses have a very different sound than passives, and I must say I recommend starting off on a passive bass.

Good point. Active basses crackle and pop and wait for attention. Passsive basses need no attention. If you're a guitar player, the Fender American HW1 is a good option. Pick one up used with a case for $550 or so and have something worth playing.

Don't get a tube amp right away. An ampeg svt with 4 tens and an 18, yikes. Get an old Crate 350 with tube preamp and get the feel with 4 tens, forget the 15, too little paper. A hartke 4 by ten with a crate should cost about $400. Get lucky and pay three and a quarter for both. That and a cheap American Pbass should do the trick. HW1s are nice if you can stand the grease bucket. Peace and good luck.
