Hi All.

On the net I bought that Jazz bass for the price of a bass guitar case... :D

With this very strange "coin":

Any hint? Replacement neck?

1) whats the serial number?

2) how many bolts are holding the neck on?

3) is there anything stamped on the heel of the neck? (or int he neck cavity on the body)

1) there is no serial number on the neck. Only the Fender logo on the front and the "coin" on the back

2) 4 bolts are holding the neck (a 5 figure number is on the bolts plate)

3) had no time to unscrew the neck yet

The question is only about the neck. i know the rest is not original: PUs are EMG, bridge is too rusty, tuner pegs look strange (alluminium?), but this coin on the neck is very strange. There's even no Jazz Bass logo on the neck, only Fender.

Hmn, correct me if I am wrong but the 5 figure number suggests, at the very least, a fairly old neck plate (That number would be the serial number).

If there is a date stamped/written on the heel of the neck, chances are it is genuine, but that coin is very strange. The only thing I've seen thats close is a coin like thing on some special series squier headstocks.

[edit - ah just read that theres not even a 'jazz bass' logo on it. Sounds fishy. Probably a replacement neck. As long as it plays well then hey, from what it sounds like you've gotten a pretty good deal either way :)

Thanks for your information ally! I appreciate.

I know that 94XXX serial on neck plate looks very vintage, but all the rest is very modern... I was after a one piece maple neck (already have an MM SR) because they sound so niiiiice and look so gooood!

Greets from Switzerland.

...ah, I forgot: the case it came with has a giant Fender logo + made in the USA embossed in the plastic shell.

If there is nothing but the Fender logo on the front (no designation of model like "Jazz Bass"), then it's likely one of the Fender-made replacement necks that were available for a short time a few years back.

They made Strat, Tele and bass necks, but none of them had a model designation: they just said "Fender" on the front.

If you unscrew the neck, I think they have some kind of identifier on the heel.

Thanks Gravity Jim

Can you qualify "a few years back" a bit more? 5 years? 10 years? 15 years? 20 years?

Thanks.

More like five. I was at the Summer NAMM show the year the necks and bodies were introduced, and I haven't been down there in a few years (I used to go to the show when I was writing a monthly column thing for EQ magazine).... as I recall, it was a very limited selection: one neck in each style, bodies in sunburst, all very "vintage-y." Fender didn't do it for very long, and I don't why they discontinued them... maybe they felt they were cannibalizing sales of complete guitars, maybe it was making counterfeits too easy to make.

If you do some digging on the web I'm sure you can learn more about these products.

Thanks Gravity Jim.

This would explain why the neck has more a Precision feel than a Jazz Bass.
Anyway, a great bass, a great deal.

It looks sweet. And that does look like a Precision nut width, now that you mention it (which I prefer to the Jazz neck, myself).

My American Deluxe P-bass has a maple fingerboard like that, and I just love it... my fave bass ever.

I was gonna say it looked very wide at the nut compared to my jazz!

I asked a friend of mine who's been playing bass since the 50's if he's ever seen anything like that ... his opinion is that some one stamped the coin themselves and put it there, we've never seen anything like that...nice looking bass tho' 8)
