Does anyone know what kind of capacitor is used on the American Standard Jazz Bass? Ceramic, Poly?

.05uf ceramic cap. I'm surprised they use such cheap and unreliable caps in those. I switched it out for a .047uf orange drop polly cap in my American Standard Jazz, and I thought it sounded smoother when I rolled the tone down.

Oh okay. If I ever get my hands on an American Standard jazz I think I'd switch to the orange drop cap. It did wonders for my Pbass.

Yeah, it's a cheap part that can really improve the tone.

Also, I highly recommend getting your hands on an american standard jazz if you can. It's a fantastic instrument.

The current .05uf ceramic cap used in Fender stuff is pretty much a reissue. That value has been obsolete in capacitor manufacturing for over 30 years and was only recently resurrected specifically by Fender who contracted someone to make some. The .047 was considered the equivalent. Since there is a 20% +/- value tolerance on ceramic caps we can say that 10% would be an average variance. Thus a .047 could actually be .0517 or it could be .0423 and that is a conservative variance range. The same is true of today's Fender “reissue” ceramic, which is the first ceramic labeled .05uf that I know of in decades. At the extreme of the stated tolerance you are looking at a theoretical actual range of .04 to .06 with the new Fender .05 ceramic cap. It is interesting to note that most Fender wiring diagrams (and diagrams by pickup makers like Seymour-Duncan) called specifically for a 0.05 tone cap even though for over 30 years the closest stated value available was 0.047. The two values are so close that when tolerance is taken into account there is actually no difference.

Wow thats pretty interesting stuff there. Anubis, I would love to own an Am. Standard jazz, but since im a college student my funds are fairly short right now. I keep promising myself that it will be the first thing I buy when I graduate and get a decent job though!! For now the mexi Pbass is holding it down pretty well.
