I really had an I opener on how these basses are painted and finished. In the adds they say they are Nito Cellulose finished.Yes but just the top for the rest of it is a thick glob of plastic.Don't get me wrong I like my bass and the sound but I wonder how it really would sound with a better paint job.The reason I am saying this is as I was putting my guitar on and the strap at the tail button slipped off and it crashed to the floor. As I cursed I thought damn another dent.Too my astonishment there was a 3"dia explosion of paint right down to the wood.So if anyone wants to try and strip and repaint one of these?I found the best way.Keep hitting it and chip away all the paint.Voila! Stripped and ready for a vintage paint job. Just a observation.

Yeah the sealer (either Fullerplast or modern poly) is really hard to get off. I call it the sarcophagus. But it needs to come for a vintage correct all nitro refinish job. Even on the regular production basses that say they are NITRO finished there is a poly undercoat. The softer thinner nitro wears off and you get the sealer showing through instead of wood as you would have expected.

However, I don't think beating it on the floor (either accidentally or on purpose) is the preferred way to get the plastic off. LOL.

Actually it is pretty labor intensive to remove it properly. Most refinish shops charge extra for stripping a body. Some as much as $150.

I wonder how much weight the sarcophagus adds?
