Alright a friend of mine has what looks to be a white fender jazz bass, and he said he's interested in selling.

although, in the corner of the headstock it says squier series.

is this one of the early squiers? and are they any good.

hes packaging it with some type of fender bass amp, and he told me to make an offer.

i dont currently have any pictures. but when i get some il post.

but does anybody have any idea how much the bass at least might be worth? im looking for a bass and amp for like under 350 bucks.

all information is greatly appreciated.

thanks,

EDIT:

In the 90's (I think) some of fender's mim were made with left over squier parts. They were sold for cheaper and they put "squier series" on it so when people heard about it they wouldn't be pissed. Giving them fair warning before they bought it.

Ohhhhh! I'd try to haggle for $250 but if it comes with the hard shell case I'd get it ($250 or $300)

His asking price is not out of line...but I'd still try to haggle to $250, if he's asking $300, chances are he's trying to at least get $250 - $275...Well, that's what I'd do when I sell stuff :)

Alright thanks everybody, il try to haggle with em a bit.

but this would be a good bass starting "kit"? I've played guitar for a few years now and i just decided to venture into bass, so i know very little about them.

If you play guitar then jazz's will be good. They have thinner necks and narrower string spacing. Tho I do like guitarists to try precisions to get their hands used to the fat necks basses have. I would go with this.

yes and p-bass do have wider and thicker necks more room for slapping and popping.. I'd like jazz necks on fast licks as they are slimmer.. I like em both but still drawn much more to the J side

Alright thanks everybody,
i don't think i'l be doing to much slap anyways, as i play rhythm guitar in the band, and I'm more picking up bass to i can fill in for some songs that we really don't need two guitars for.

but im drawn to the thinner neck and closer strings. I have played a P-bass before and though i do like them, there's something about the jazz bass that always caught my attention.

Hey man, for that kind of change, if you got the coin, go for it!

I do like PBass too, Steve Harris was the guy that got me into the bass, but with my small hands I do like the Jbass. I can play with both, but the JBass is easier for me to play. My '87 has a P/J set up.

This is a made in Mexico Fender Squier Series bass. It was made using the same machines and finishing as the regular MIM production of the time by the same people doing the full blown Fender production. These are some of the better crafted Squiers of the 90's, but still not as good as a full blown Fender because they were made with cheaper or inferior blanks. Also they used electronics and hardware that was inferior. I've played a few of these and they play very well. They are good upgrade platforms for sure but sometimes they are poorly balanced. Squiers were being MIM while Fender switched Squier's Asian production locations. (FYI they earlier did some made in USA Squiers for a very brief period while previously switching overseas production in 1989 I think it was. The USA models are probably the rarest Squiers ever because it was only for very brief period.)

I can't tell what model BXR amp that is. It would help to know which model for sure. It looks small but we don't have anything to compare it to.

Whatever you pay you should figure on buying the bass and an amp that you could use for home practice and little else.

If it was here where I live, with the economy so bad right now I'd offer $175 and go as high as $200 for the whole package and not go much higher. That is more than he'd get for the whole package at any pawn shop around here. I'm seeing full blown MIM Fenders go for 250 to 300 here. A fellow I work with who also plays bass bought a very slightly used Fender 2007 MIM Precision in sunburst with the plastic still on the pickguard for $250 plus tax at a retail music store. They took it in on trade. There wasn't a mark on it. It was a nice find.

Carefully removing the Squier series logo on these MIM Squiers has been done also, so be cautious buying MIM Fenders made around this time with the solid black logos and carefully look for evidence of decal removal around the tip of the headstock. The FENDER part of the decal is identical and the serial numbers look fully Fender so sometimes it is hard to tell.

Thanks, this is some information i wan looking for.

As for the amp, its a BXR 25. so yeah a little practice amp.

and 250, for a MIM fender? thats amazing compared to what i get here. the MIM fenders are going like 400-450 used here. 200 bucks would barely get me an Indonesian squier.

But again thanks for the insight.

If you look hard enough you can get better deals. I just picked up a squier pbass for $75. I know someone who picked up a squier for $30. And a mim for $100. Check out TB's 'hot deals' amd check fpr your area.

I've seen MIM's for $100 here but they weren't in my area.

I might be able to get the whole combo, the bass, amp and the case, and possibly another set of strings for 250$

I'm going to pick it up sometime this week.

I'm wondering if all the people that replied realize you're in Canada. From posts I've read here, prices are considerably higher. If it were me, I 'd go $250.

As Brother Dave said, it's a good platform bass to build on. Who knows? you may get lucky and get a really great bass.

As I always say, play every bass you can afford before you buy, you'll know the right one when you find it. Good luck.

yeah, prices are rather high were i live.

But i went over and played the bass. then bought it.

I don't really know too much about basses but this feels very well built. and the neck has a really nice feel to it.

It was pretty dirty when i got it home, but after a bit of cleaning it looks great.

The amps alright, but the first input jack is smashed. it still works, but a little tug on the cord and you get some pretty bad static.
Whats the difference between the two inputs? i read something about a active or a passive bass, but yeah not really sure what that's all about.

Overall. its a very nice bass.
