I have a 2004 American Jazz Bass and I love it, but I want to try some flats on it. I hear all about some necks bending under strain from some flats and I know you can adjust the truss rod but I wouldn't really know what to do. Does anybody know a good set of flats that I could use that wouldn't really affect the neck? Thanks in advance...

I use D'addario chromes ML on my MIM precision bass. They are .45-.100 but feel like a reqular medium set of flat wounds. It really doesnt affect the neck much on my bass and you still get a great flatwound sound from them. It should affect an american fender even less since the American standards have the graphite reinforced neck.

Flats are higher tension, so switching to them would require some truss rod adjustment. If you don't feel comfortable you can get a professional to do it, but it's a pretty simple task. Also, American basses have graphite support rods in the neck, so the truss rod shouldn't need as much adjustment as on other basses after switching to flats.
