The "button thingy" that you can see on the back of 1960's Jazz Basses - what is it? A hanger? A strap button? Is there anywhere I can get it?

It's a strap button. The actual hardware as far as I know is just a normal vintage strap button, so as long as you can find the relative place to drill the hole (and don't drill too deep!) it should be doable. Honestly though I've never seen someone actually use it as a strap button. It's like how many basses have thumb rests in a place you would never rest your thumb.

Yeah it's a throw back they keep on the reissues for "authenticity" since they used to have them for those guitar straps that attached to the headstock. Some acoustic guitars still use that kind I think.
