I hear a lot of people rave about Seymour Duncan quarter pounders. I have to say, I've never understood what people see in them. Yes, they have a strong attack, but the intense midrange scoop kills it for me. (I'm speaking more for the jazz pickups, the precision and SC precision ones are not as bad).

Now, there's a ton of people who love the pickups, and I'm curious to hear people's thoughts on them.

BAH! I clicked enter too soon. (Continued from above)

So, if you have a jazz bass with quarter pounders, I'd love to hear your thoughts about them. Just because I don't love them doesn't mean they're not good pickups, and I'd like to understand what people's experience with them is.

I'm not trying to bash the pickups, just understand what people see in them, because I've been at a loss for a while.

hmm quarter pounders do have advantages and well ugh disadvantages...

Since I'm more drawn to vintage sounding one..
QP's are more like beefed up stock pickups to my ears a bit louder, sharp, and twangy..

I tried ones from a friend but errr no plans on buying them.. I'll stick with Fender Originals or Antiquities Jive

I had quarter pounders years back on my old jazz bass. I've forgotten that until now, They were nice and I was playing heavier stuff back then. Now I have vintage 62s and to me are much nicer sounding.

quarter pounds tend to be beefy and punchy rather than having the vintage growling jazz sound

They have more of a rock/metal sound to them especially played through an SVT Classic and an 8x10. I myself like the stock Fender pickups that they are using now. To my ears they sound great through my current amp set up and will no doubt sound even better when I up grade.

The jazz24 had them wired active which I thought (IMO) got rid of this problem.

I have the 24 and both worship leaders of the two bands I am in like the QP's or should I say the fat sound they emit. I personally like the sound of my MIM Jazz Deluxe have the Growl. This is a tone i like yet the QP's do what they do.

Keeping it low

Quarter Pounds work great on the active basses too.. but err for me as a passive guy.. nah not really but for P-bass I like em.. for Jazz I'd look somewhere else~

Yeah. The P quarter pounders also have more midrange than the J counterparts, which is kind of surprising. And the hi mids are less crucial to a modern P tone.

And yeah, I'm a passive guy as well. I suppose there's an advantage to having a more flat sound with active... maybe... not sure.

^ and this is why I have 2 pbasses with qp's. I like the headroom of an active. I'm not one of those bassists that is base note only. I'm more jaco-ish but in a roger waters kinda way :D

yeah I'd prefer classic p or j basses as passives but for actives I'd go for musicman or other high powered humbuckers..

Q pounders have their own flavor, don't expect it to be the same as the original stock pickups. However they don't last as long as the original Fenders, my bridge p.up gave up after 12 years.

Thanks.
