hey fellow fender fans. I'm a bassist from the philippines. I need help regarding my uncle's Fender Jazz Bass, which is mine now.. I can't help but to think that it's not a genuine fender J-bass. You see, there is no serial number present, or maybe it's just at the end of the neck when you unscrew it. My uncle received it back in 1999 (i think) from a band mate. He said it was from Pampanga here in the Phils.. I am very brand-conscious, and i want to know if this is FOR REAL. BTW, these are the physical characteristics of this unidentifiable J-bass:
1. It says Fender Jazz Bass at the headstock.
2. The "Jazz Bass" part is written in big letters, kinda like 70s J-basses
3. Rosewood fingerboard. The neck & headstock are kinda beige-white in color.
4. Candy Apple finish (I think)
5. NO SERIAL NUMBERS present anywhere.
6. Clay (not pearl) dot inlays
7. The peg that you put into the strap at the front is not in the location of where it should really be.
8. The 2 pickups are not 100% aligned (They should be, right?) , but are parallel like it should be.[/img]

It is hard to say what you have without pictures. The Phillipines had the best counterfeiters in the world in the 60's and 70's when it came to making home made copies of Fender basses and guitars.

If your Jazz bass is an early to mid 60's model it should have a small logo and a serial number on the neckplate. That would be consistent with a clay dot neck. Many serial number plates have been removed so it could still be genuine although the lack of a serial number makes it very likely that the bass was either stolen at some point or a counterfeit creation.
The fact that it has a large 70's logo is not consistent with a clay dot neck.
If it is a 70's bass, it should have block inlays on the finger board. Block inlays are more work for someone who is making a Fender bass so that to me says your bass may be a home made instrument.
Many of these home made basses are good instruments and work fine but they are not as good as a real Fender bass.
Post some pictures if you want more opinons.

Yeah pictures would help. Fender has a lot of different incarations and with the knock-offs out there it's hard to say.
