I have a MIM Jazz Deluze circa 2005. It comes with Fender Noiseless pickups. For the most part it has been quiet. I recently shielded the inside with copper adhesive (shielding) tape. That seems to have brought on hum (more akin to a trebly buzz) - which intensifies when I turn up the treble pots OR touch the pickups with my fingers. The only thing that quiets the hum is when I touch the strings or tuners. Very unsophisticated description - I know. Wonder if anyone has had the same issue.
I know the easy answer is remove the copper shielding tape to see if that reduces the hum/buzz. But, I dont have any more tape to replace if that is not the case.
Anyone have similar issues? Could it be a ground wire issue?
BTW - lest you think it is an amp hum or cable issue - I have a P-Bass with a Lawrence P-46 pickup that is dead quiet into the same amp using the cable I use with the Jazz.
Any thoughts and ideas are appreciated,
T

Sight unseen, I'm inclined to believe that when you plug your cable into the input jack, either the tip of the cable or the clip of the input jack is touching the foil. Or, one of the legs of one of the pots is touching the foil.

That is good to know. I have a Victor Bailey V and I have been frustrated with the same problem. :)

That would be my guess. Also remember that the chrome control plate is part of the ground loop as well, and sometimes you can have a loose or exposed wire touching it.

I've installed the pickups according to the included specs and everything seems to be in good working order. The 5 way switch works, the tone and volume pots do their job the only trouble I'm having is when I switch to the neck and neck/middle pickup positions I get a heavy buzz but all the other positions are buzz free.

any suggestions where I should start?

Thank you,

-Mike

Greetings, Mike.

Again, sight unseen, the neck pickup's terminal/wire at the switch may be touching the body of the guitar once the pickguard has been reinstalled. Because the body of your guitar has a base coat of shielding paint, you have a positive touching a negative. Put a piece of electrical tape (or two) directly below the selector switch on the body as insulation to keep the terminal/wire and paint separated. This may very well solve your problem.

Your diagnosis was spot on. I put a few layers of electrical tape under the 5-way switch and now my noiseless pickups are actually noiseless! Thank you so much!
