I have an american deluxe jazz s/n N7321176 which indicates it was made in 1997. I bought new in 1998 but I don't know if its ash or alder. It is finished in teal with a maple board. Anyone know how I can tell what body wood was used?

It is most likely alder. Ash was used on transparent finishes like natural. Alder was used on opaque finishes. That is a general rule however at different times instruments were available on custom order in ash.

Thanks. I sorta felt like it was alder. I have an am dlx bass V that is ash and there is a difference in tone more to my liking.
