I'm a trumpet player, but picked up playing bass way back in high school (took my acoustic when I bought my first car to make sure it fit). I've got a Jazz Bass that says 7 APR 64 on the end of the neck, and I've had the thing since around 1968. I don't play very much, and think this is an excellent (and probably valuable) bass.

Given how little I use it, I've considered finding out what it's worth and selling it, probably buying a new jazz bass and using the rest for a new trumpet!! (since that's where I make my money!)

I'm new to the forum today.... is there a place that gives estmated values for these classic instruments? Mine is all original but shows wear on the back. Otherwise good playing condition.

Where should I look?

thanks for any help

Yeah a bona fide '64 Jazz in good, original condition can range anywhere from $10,000 to $25,000 from what I've seen. I think you should keep it however. They aren't making them anymore  and the value is likely to continue to climb over time IMO.

I'd play it too if I was you!

That's what I heard, but Grun says it's only $7,500 (which isn't chicken feed) but that's based on pictures alone.

There is that..... I used to play more when I directed our college jazz band and I didn't have a bass player, but we don't have that anymore. Since I only pick it up once a year or so, and I pick up a trumpet for hours each day, I was thinking it would be better to get some trumpets I'd use rather than keep the bass.....

Playing it next Tues for another faculty member doing Peggy Lee's FEVER. But I'm such a sorry bass player I could probably sell this and have money left over to get a new jazz bass and not notice the difference (except the new one would be shiny....)

I'm in a similar situation with my trombone. It's an Elhart 88H (which probably only means something if you're a trombone player) and that's a "classic" also but not NEAR as valuable as this. My thinking has always been "I own it, and eventhough I only play it once in a while, I might as well keep it."

The only thing shifting my thinking is my Fender has significantly more value that any other instrument I own. The poor bass would probably be happier in the hands of a really good bass player! :D

In my opinion a 45 year old bass should have some wear on it. If it doesn't, that means that it didn't play well enough to get used or that it has been refinished. At any rate I am suspect of 45 yr old MINT looking basses.

If yours is all original with the original case, you can expect it to fetch quite a sum in spite of the buckle rash on the back. That is quite normal. Photos would help immensely.

A 63-64 Fender bass is worth a little more than a 64-65 one because of a finish change in mid 1964. Still worth a lot of money though. You could buy a new trumpet and take a sea cruise maybe.

Congratulations on hanging onto it for all these years!

My local music shop just sold a 64 Jazz bass for $7000, yours however is in better condition so I bet it would sell around $8k. I myself would wait until the economy gets better and people have money to blow off again ^^

I recommend Willies Amerian Guitars in St Paul if you want to commission a sale. Willies sold my 65 Jazz Bass a couple of years ago and I received a very fair price. Guitar Center Hollywood also does a big vintage business. For me, commissioning a reputable dealer took the risk out of showing or shipping it and a reputable dealer will command a higher price than you might get on your own.
