I tried 2 MIM jazz basses the other day at Guitar Center and both seem to have "jack inputs" that didn't seem right. The jack didn't really "snap" into the input like others do. The input itself didn't feel loose but the jack seemed like it slid in and out too easy. Anyone else notice this? The bass felt really good, so good I ended up ordering a new MIM sunburst w/ a maple fretboard.

Nobody else has noticed this? The one I ordered is the same.

It's possible that the jack on both of them have been warn down. Honestly though, jacks are quite easy and inexpensive to replace. You shouldn't have to, but if it comes down to that, it's not the end of the world.

$@!&, I have a MIA jazz bass and the input jack did the same thing after about 6 months.

I'll probably have it replaced then because the new one is loose too. I guess there's soldering involved?

I took the control plate loose and just bent the clip on the input...works just fine. I guess it's a "south of the border" problem. Oh well, it works fine.

Did the pic come through?

mine was like that, then i tried bending it in but bent it to far and snapped it,
then i replaced it with what i realise now was a very cheap one, it snapped to.
needless to say my bass is now called breaker.

I didn't look when I had the control panel off, I guess a new input has to be soldered in?

I bought an MIM fretless this past Saturday and noticed the exact same thing. I wasn't sure if the patch cable went fully in...it felt a little strange when I plugged it in...but it works and that's all I care about. I'll be using this for recording only.

Jacks should snap in crisply or you aren't getting real good contact. Better contact equals more signal. Switchcraft jacks seem to last a long time. When the connection is getting loose, you can GENTLY bend the tip contact and get a crisp snap when you insert the cable...or as has been pointed out you can break the tip when doing this. When it breaks, replace it.

New SWITCHCRAFT EP-0055-000 chrome jacks are about $3 in the USA. Those are the ones to get, or you can buy the Fender packaged jack which is precisely the same thing. You can solder a new jack in yourself in five minutes. If you don't know how to solder there are FOUR tutorials on soldering on my INSTRUMENT SETUP & MAINTENANCE page which you'll find the link to on my resources page if you click the link in my forum signature below. Why pay somebody to do it or stress over it when it is so simple if you only jump in and do it? For $10 to $15 you can get jack, solder, soldering iron and you'll need a pair of needle-nose pliers which your probably already have.

Or you can pay someone $30 to do it for you. Soldering is really pretty easy, just don't burn yourself or your guitar's finish.

I don't think they make them like they used to. I have replaced three jacks in the past two years. The lower bout side mounted jacks like on the '51 RI P-Bass are a booger. I don't think a rookie would want to go there.
