A student I have been teaching on the bass has a Squier Jazz bass that has the same wiring as a Fender Standard Jazz. I'm asking this here because Squier didn't have a forum, and I figured someone knowledgeable enough may be willing to help me.

I've noticed that if both volume knobs are all the way up, or if one is all the way down, there is no problem. However, if you try to balance the sound between pickups with both of them having some volume, but with either of them less than full volume, there is a hum sent through the amp. I'm hoping this is just a wiring problem and not a problem with any of the components itself, but can anyone tell me where I should look for the source of the problem on his bass.

That is the nature of single coil pickups. The reason the hum goes away when the pickups are balanced is because the bridge and neck PU are reverse wound and reverse polarity from each other. So when the volumes are equal, they essentially create a humbucker, which eliminates the noise.

You can reduce the noise by shielding the control cavity, or by swapping to stacked pickups, but I don't know if switching pickups would be a worthwhile mod on a starter bass guitar.

Thanks for the info. Since it is a starter bass, and belongs to someone else, I guess I wonl't worry about it too much.

How exactly would you shield the cavity? I recently purchased a Road Worn Jazz Bass and I am having the same problem. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks.
