And to the OP -- I have an American Vintage 62 reissue Jazz that will stay with me until the end! Great bass. You should try several Fender and G&L jazz basses and find the one that feels/sounds best to you.

The vintage '62 jazz bass really caught my eye, but dont you have to take the neck off to adjust the truss rod?

Yes, so if you live in an area with a lot of weather change that may be an inconvenience factor to consider. I live in Southern California (not too far from the Fender factory actually) and our weather is pretty mild. I've changed strings a few times and never had to adjust my truss rod on my 62 Jazz, but I have other reissues where I've had to. It's a bit of a pain.

I live in michigan and have to adjust the truss rod about 4 times a year so that is a big no for me. I prefer the truss rod adjustment at the headstock anyway. Why doesnt fender do that with the Am. Standard series?

It has to do with the way they construct the neck. In the MIM basses the trussrod is inserted in the back of the neck, hence the skunkstripe on the back of the neck.

However the MIA basses also have two graphite strengthening rods in the neck, which can't be fit in through the back. Therefore they insert the trussrod and graphite rods through the front of the neck. When this is done, it's apparently easier to have the trussrod adjustment at the bottom of the neck instead of the headstock.
