I know, i've used some choice words in that headline. I've heard good things about the US Series JB-2 including that it is more resonant, higher quality, and has fuller sounding pickups than an American Jazz. I haven't had the chance to try out any G&L's myself. Has anyone here played a G&L bass? Whats are the differences? After all, Leo Fender designed this instrument and said that G&L guitars were the best he had ever made! tell me what you think

G&Ls are great basses and so are Fender basses. They have different voices so to speak.
The G&L JB2, and the recently introduced G&L JB bass, (the JB uses the Jazz bass body shape) ,have Jazz style pickups and similiar circuitry to a standard Jazz bass, They do feature the G&L saddle lock bridge which is a very nice bridge which has a protrusion underneath its base that pushes against the end grain of the bass body, giving you more sustain. All G&L basses have this bridge.

Other G&Ls that you may want to try are the L-2000 and the SB-2.
The L-2000 has MFD humbucking pickups, active circuitry and a unique body shape unlike any Fender. The SB-2 has a P-J MFD pickup set up and it is a passive bass that features separate volume controls for each pickup but no tone control.
The L-2000 and SB2 are also featured in the G&L Tribute line which are imported basses from Indonesia that have USA pickups and sell for about one third the cost of a USA made bass.

Thanks BCBassman. Im kind of dead set on the jazz bass tone, so the other options although great, do not really suit my taste. How does the sound of the JB-2 compare to that of an American Std. Jazz Bass? is it really that much different?

I don't own a JB2, so I can't say for sure, but I suspect that it will be similiar in tone to a American standard Jazz Bass.
You really have to try the basses for yourself.
Buying an American Standard Jazz bass will not dissapoint you if that is what you want to do. A Jazz bass is always great to have and they are a very versatile bass. IMHO every bass player should have at least one Jazz bass.

My favorite G&L is the ASAT. Totally awesome instrument and probably the most versatile G&L. I don't own one but maybe someday.

I've had a 71 Jazz, an 86 MIM Jazz and currently have no Jazz and I'm perfectly happy with three P basses and an active Ibanez SRX700. I don't think I'll ever have another Jazz. I tried the Deluxe American Jazz recently and while it is very nice instrument, I just can't play a J neck as comfortably because I just like the P neck.

If the very top of the line Fender Jazz couldn't win me back over then I'm probably done with them. But the ASAT would be a real upgrade to my active Ibanez because of the amazing range of voices it can produce. The 12 inch radius makes the 1.5 inch nut width neck more playable for me.

An ASAT bass is a great bass, Dave, but you have to be ready to put up with some neck dive, because that lack of a top horn is going to make the bass unbalanced. Also the ASAT bass comes with a Jazz bass sized neck.
That is something a dedicated Precision player, like yourself, may find uncomfortable.

If you want to ge tthe G&L active tone in a more P-bass friendly package and at a more affordable price, you may want to check out an L-2000.
The L-2000's usually come with a neck that is closer in size to a P-bass and their bodies are better balanced due to the top horn.

I know they're nice basses...Zod actually has an SB-2. Maybe he can chime in as far as playability, I know you're looking more on the JB-2 tho - so maybe his input won't really help you CtB.

I actually recently got to try out a G&L at a local music shop i found. It was a tribute SB-2 and it wasn't bad, but it wasnt exactly my style. I dont like how theres only 1 volume knob for a P/J configuration. I love the neck, which is pretty much the same as the JB-2. Unfortunately all the basses in the store seemed to be kind of neglected and needing attention, and this was a tribute series, not the real deal, so i dont think i can say ive truly experienced a G&L.

My '87 originally came with 1 master volume for the P/J's that was on it. When I got the EMG I thought to keep 'em separate, so now 2 volume knobs. Good luck in trying 'em out tho, keep it fun right.

Yeah the Sb-2 is a great bass, the stock pickups are great. Im just a fan of the J/J configuration a lot more than P/J.

Right now i have a Schecter Stiletto. Its a neck-thru bass with a mahogony body, and it has EMG-HZ pickups with an active preamp. The thing is a tank and plays great. Then i also have my MIM Pbass in sage green. Its a beautiful color and ive never seen anyone that has one in this finish. Its also a great player but totally different from the Schecter. The dream bass for me is a MIA jazz, or something of the like. Such as the JB-2.

Is the sage geen that seafoam green? If it is my friend has a P Bass w/Select pups on it...it's a really nice color. Can you post pix? Schecters are nice basses.
