I just bought a 2009 American Standard Jazz bass about a week ago, and I'm having troubles with the open A string buzzing. The string does not buzz anywhere else on the neck when fretted. Also, when I play the open A-string, I can take my left hand and put pressure above the nut and the buzzing goes away.

All the other strings are fine. I tried restringing the A-string but that didn't help.

Anyone with similar problems and what did you do to fix it?

Thanks

I had a similar problem with my MIM 1970's Classic Series Jazz. The open A-string just sounded hollow and quieter than the other strings (especially compared to a fretted 5th 'A' on the E string).

Without doing anything, this has resolved itself somehow. My strings - which were brand new when the problem occurred - are now a bit deader and perhaps that has helped.

Hope you find the answer to your problem because it is a pain when you buy a new toy and it has a fault!

I also have a Squier Classic Vibe Series jazz bass, and I believe the build quality is better than the Amer Std I received. For one, the fret edges along the fretboard are smooth as glass, and the setup on it was perfect. However, my CV just doesn't have the same sound as the Amer Std.

I had an issue with the A string popping out of it's nut groove (and also vibrating unpleasantly when played open).

The solution is to physically push (quite hard) the string down around the winding post when stringing. Get it to the bottom of the post if you can. A stringwinder helps here if you have one, as it speeds the process up.

So doing pulls the string tauter against the nut groove and solves the problem of poping out / vibrating.

Brand new basses often have insufficient windings on the tuning pegs. This problem should disappear when you replace the strings and ensure that the windings begin at the top of the peg and finish nearest the wood of the headstock.

Check the tuning machines for loose parts. It could be the A string machine head that is rattling or some part close by.

Adjust the bridge saddle on A string.

This sounds like a case of the nut not matching the string gauge. If the buzz goes away when you press above the nut, it's because the added tension is keeping the string from vibrating laterally in a nut groove that's too wide.

You have two options: Use the same brand of string that came on the bass originally or get a new nut. If you're on a budget, cut a piece of notebook paper and place it in the groove under the offending string. The paper is thin enough that it won't change the action that much, and the string tension will keep it in place.

I've done this back when I was a broke college student. Works great!

I agree...

Normally you only want about two or three wraps around the post, though with the buzzing problem, wind as much of the 'A' string around the post as possible. If the existing string doesn't have enough to this, you will need a brand new 'A' string. Just make sure you have enough string to wind enough around the machine head so it pushes the string down as far as possible. This should easily eliminate the buzzes with an additional tree or other adjustments.

The only negative problem with the extra string wound around the string will be some initial tuning instability. This should subside when the string has settled in.
