Can you give a little more info? What are the conditions under which you are getting these noises? What doe these "freaky noises" sound like?

well it buzzes and booms. I did forget to mention it only happens when its plugged into the cable snake... in a normal amp its just fine.. I heard this problem can be solved by a direct box.. what do you think?

Well it does sound more like sound system issue rather than anything with the bass itself. Have you tried a direct box of a SansAmp? Or perhaps the snake is bad; do any other instruments plug into the the system and experience the same problem?

Yeah if youve tried it on a normal amp and its fine, then surely its not the bass.

Discounting a problem with the snake itself, I believe you really have two problems. 1. An impedance mismatch. 2. Far too long a cable run for a high impedance instrument level signal.

There are three possible solutions.

1. Use a direct box. You can buy really cheap ones or really expensive ones. Even the cheapest box would be an improvement over what you have now.

2. The Sansamp or an equivalent emulator as previously recommended would make your bass sound better than a direct box. They cost about $200 US. They feed a low impedance signal output to the PA and everything should be hunky dory then.

3. Go wireless to the board with a really good wireless set up. The receiver should be right at the board. Wireless setups are popular but a good one is way expensive.

I think the Sansamp type device would be a very pleasing and economical solution.

There are other similar devices to the Sansamp with low impedance outputs that can also be used to feed the PA. Like the Line 6 Bass Pod and the Aphex Bass Xciter pedal.

I would also recommend a compressor pedal with a low impedance output like the Aphex Punch Factory as either a stand alone device to feed the PA or in the audio chain just before the Sansamp. That keeps your bass signal more consistent for the PA feed and the tech doesn't have to ride your gain. I think the combination of the Sansamp with a decent compressor of some sort will give you a very pleasing result. So for the Sansamp and compressor pedal combined you are looking at about 340 US dollars. That is half what a good wireless setup usually costs and frankly the Sansamp with a good compressor will sound far better than even the best wireless bass system. You could use the Sansamp and/or compressor live, for recording and into your home computer for home practice and home recording.

Try to keep passive signal cables (in front of amp/direct box or amp emulator) shorter than 25 feet in total. Really the shorter the better.

Also keep in mind that mic preamps on PA mixers are not really "voiced" for bass guitar and usually yield unsatisfactory tonal results when you just plug a bass directly into them with no processing. That is why the Sansamp, BassPods and all the rest were invented.

Does it have a low impedance XLR output for the PA? The ones I've seen don't. But if it works, then good!

i also had the same problem before. what i did was, remove the plastic pot for the volume knob, and i tightened the nut (small bolt) that is there when you remove the plastic pot.
i also think this is what they call the pickups being "grounded" or something. hope i helped.
